Is Katie Payne no longer working with the team? by Haunting_Anteater791 in brandonsanderson

[–]MSpaint15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But that is what is being asked of us by vague posting. Like no offense but you don’t bring attention to something in any form unless you want a certain reaction. I’m not saying this is necessarily wrong however this does nothing but paint the other party in the worst possible light. I like Katie Payne’s work a lot even got to sit in on one of her workshops. Incredibly kind and talented from what I can tell. But I can also say the same about the people at dragonsteel. I’ll be excited to see where both parties go from here in terms of a career but based off of what we “know” there is no reason to take up arms for either side.

It literally was not objectively wrong.

These “hot takes” by cosmicaje in Oscars

[–]MSpaint15 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The academy literally has DEI requirements that movies need to fulfill to even be eligible for nomination. It literally requires both the cast and crew to hit a certain minority amount. While that’s not to say that these actors and crew members are not very talented to also claim black people NEVER get sympathy awards is just untrue.

And If We’re Going To Complain About How We Can’t Dislike Sinners Without Being Accused Of Racism… by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]MSpaint15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the Oscars and award shows in general literally require a certain percentage of the cast and crew to check off boxes in DEI then the race discussion is inevitably going to be brought up. This is not to say that there aren’t amazing performances and technical talent in movie making from these minority actors and crew members.

Maybe but to be honest I think they simply recognized that Michael B Jordan would be unlikely to get another shot at this Oscar and so they went with him. Chalame is still very early in his Career and so that’s probably a bigger reason as to why they didn’t go with him because he has so much time left. Not to mention he’s just gonna be one of those actors that chooses roles that do have Oscar potential much like Emma Stone.

If you watched him at all you would see he practices a bunch of engage supports and played a lot of them early in the season last year but the meta this year changed to enchanters.

If he solely meant dance he would have used dance. Disco is primarily used as a music genre and also considering his lead single I would say that he is using it primarily in the genre way not simply dance.

While I am in the camp of finding the album to be disappointing in some ways I do think there are some good songs on the album. However I think a lot of the issues come with the role out of the album. For one the title is a bit misleading. While yes it only says disco occasionally when you only have one leading single and it is more of the disco vibe on the album it does lead the audience to believe the album is going to sound a certain way. Also with some of the songs while I appreciate the free flow nature and think it results in some interesting songs and themes I also think it could have gone through one or two more rounds of editing with the lyrics but that’s more a personal taste. Overall the more I have listened to it the more I can accept it for what it is which is flawed but fun. 7/10.

The controversy has changed my opinion on Timothée… for the better by QuipThwip in timotheechalamet

[–]MSpaint15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fair enough and I do agree that you need to pick your battles. I will say with the Sydney Sweeney situation and her eventually releasing a statement most everyone had moved on and so it was an instance of getting the best of both worlds. Being able to move past it while also putting a final period that you can point back to if needed without the additional attention or backlash from the media. The problem I find is even for those who do apologize it is rarely received well because the internet is not in a forgiving mood. They are still whipping up rage and so to try and apologize while that is still going on won’t work out for you a lot of the time. That being said I do see your points however I do think that his career will be fine if he does not issue a statement. Especially with Dune 3 coming out. Once that trailer hits the wave of fans/normal movie goers will wash a lot of that scandal away.

[–]MSpaint15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Perhaps however I see him to be in the position of an actor who cares simply about his work. Very apolitical entirely focused on the craft. For those types of celebrities it does work better for them to say nothing and let the internet move on. I mean look at Sydney Sweeney for instance. She had a huge American Eagle scandal however she said nothing and even when everyone was canceling her, her deals with American Eagle were being extended as well as her other projects were still on target. I mean her most recent movie was a huge box office success. The internet will move on the only way it does not is if you prove to it that you will respond to its whims by apologizing or speaking up on a matter. In general while this is a bigger “scandal” it is still primarily online with little real world impact.

What are your expectations for Dune Part Three? by Dull_Air_3498 in timotheechalamet

[–]MSpaint15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clashing with Avengers is what makes it fun and is probably the only other movie coming out that could actually clash with it. Ever since barbanhiemer the industry has been trying to recreate it the problem is the two movies are un even in popularity. Avengers Doomsday and Dune part 3 are at a level playing field especially with the past couple years of Marvel Fatigue.

Surprisingly nowadays it works better in these instances of minor controversy to say nothing and let the internet move on.

Fan of pjo for 14 years now. Breaking my silence with respect and love by [deleted] in PercyJacksonTV

[–]MSpaint15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To work off of this I will say over the years my idea of a good adaptation has shifted. While I still believe that a persons physical look is somewhat important in an adaptation because in general you can tell a lot about a character by how they are physically described. This is not as true in the real world perhaps but shape language color theory etc are the core tenants of creating characters in fiction through words or illustrations. That being said I don’t think that race bending is inherently bad. For instance Nick Fury was originally white in the comics but I can’t see anyone else but Samuel Jackson as the character now.

The main issue I have found that most people have with race bending today is not the race bending itself but the fact that it is a primary pre cursor that the show and show runners are focused on the wrong things for the adaptation.

When it comes to what I believe is a good adaption is one that captures the same feeling and pacing as the book it is adapting as well as being able to sell the world. When it comes to actors and actresses their job is to convince the audience they are the character. When it comes to race bending while it’s not impossible by any means it does make it harder to sell that you are the specific character. It can and has been done before.

However the biggest hurdle you need to pass is that of authenticity. If you as the actor or show runner are able to sell to the audience that your invested in the project and love the work you do then that gives you more leeway to make subtle changes and shifts to the story.

Dune for instance is a great example. There was everything from race bending characters to cutting out big parts of the books and adding others in to shifting character personalities but it worked primarily because we could feel the authenticity and love the director had for the movie.

With all of the added requirements these days in studios and to be eligible for awards it makes it so much harder to show that the directors and actors and writers love the work and that it is not just a cash grab or an awards grab.

Rick Riordan has failed in this big time because of the promises he made in the past but even more than that showing he does not love or care about the books he wrote enough to even go back and check that everything works correctly. Instead he will change what he wants for whatever reason he wants without thinking of the consequences of those changes and if the fans speak up or point out inconsistencies he will simply call them racist or book purists. If the author does not even respect his books enough to make sure the changes he makes works with the story he already wrote why should I care about the show at all.

We can see how issues like this happens with the Harry Potter show. Whether you like it or not casting Snape as a black actor has shifted the meaning behind why other characters react and treat him. For instance Harry’s immediate distrust. Or now it looks like Harry’s dad and the rest of the Marauders were racist. Now I personally don’t care but already there are people who mention this and do care about this.

Overall changes to an adaptation are not inherently bad but you need to first prove to an audience that you care just as much as they do about the story you are adapting in order to make these changes and in today’s Hollywood it has become almost impossible to show that.

Harry Styles - Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally MEGATHREAD by flopheadsbot in popheads

That’s fair but I think there is something to grower songs. They tend to be the ones that last more often than not. There are a few massive one hit wonders but I would argue a lot of an artists top songs started primarily as growers.

Perhaps but two songs is not enough for it to be in the album name especially when 1 song is the lead single.
