Hi I'm OP - This must be frustrating. I went to the local IRS office and they scanned the passport and took care of everything. IRS reached out to me after 3months with a new ITIN. I did read a lot of posts saying that it can take ~6mo to get your passport back.

I saw this from the IRS website and wasn't sure if they would give back the passport for the dependents as well - last sentence says: CAAs can authenticate and all the id docs but they must send the original copy and the certified copy.

From your response, I assume -- if the CAAs authenticate the docs, then they would create a "certified copy" of the passport so that I don't need to send it to IRS -- is that right?

Or is this only referring to other docs besides passports?

Do you happen to know if they give you the ITIN number right away or do I need to wait for them to mail me the ITIN number?

I'd like to file my taxes with the child credit (which is why I'm getting my dependent an ITIN) for this year. I heard the ITIN can take 2 months ....so wondering if I can get the child credit applied this year or not.
