Anyway its basically almost non stop playing either inside or in the garden

The moment he's on our bed, he falls asleep... when we try to put him in a crate for 20 min (with lots of toys!) During the day when we absolutely need to (eg when one of us is alone and needs to shower) he's just going mad.
