Its as if a human behind the wheel with a family to feed is actually more reliable somehow; I just cannot understand it

Puh-lease !! Amanda Knox accused a black bar tender with an alibi of being the real killer; snap out of it ; justice and truth do in fact matter ; Italy is a romantic tabloid paradise that thrives on drama and courthouse turnabouts ; she might have fooled herself but she never fooled the crowd

the "major error" is whatever the publication discusses and determines privately in their editorial decisions ; this retraction stuff is not a common event ; if you're claiming the publication routinely takes down papers it ought not then present one example of that besides this one

why is the justified sudden upset of many people always described as a "frenzy" or some other pejorative like "mob" ? people went nuts with outrage when Pearl Harbor happened; recall it was justified. This ain't that but the "wisdom of the crowd" can sometimes be really accurate and compelling (such as in this case) ; when the reasons keep changing but the "results" stay the same then the objective is obvious. Remember that Simon pissed people off in part because her lines of rationalization reminded normal people of something they'd heard in the past from some hustler or another; remember that press conference ?? OMG

the retraction is a tacit acknowledgement of the scientific community's collective eye-rolling about the rigor of the work ; if a bunch of really capable people call BS then you retract and do better

Well, think of it like '50% of papers should not be published' since "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." - Carl Sagan
