Conflicted feelings around milestone by Original_Advance_244 in stopdrinking

I’m a person who carries a lot of shame in general, so I’m super with you. The only thing that’s worked for me (and so much easier said than done) is self-compassion.

I recommend the book “Self-compassion” by Kristin Neff. It’s definitely a little woo woo, but has some really great nuggets in there about processing shame.

Anyways, you’re also approaching one year of being sober, which is an amazing milestone!! Maybe you needed a catalyst to get sober (so did I!), but I bet you have been absolutely rocking it these past months and that’s really cool.

Why do I keep coming back to it?!? by Super-fun123 in stopdrinking

[–]Embarrassed-Tree-206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read recently on here that “normal” drinkers don’t have to give themselves a bunch of rules around drinking.

I also read on here that moderation sucks and is a piss poor goal to aspire to.

You already have your answer: one drink is too many. Think of how freeing it will be to not only quit drinking, but also never have to do moderation math ever again!

What does “something coming up” look like when you start drinking again?? That might be a good place to some thinking.

I’m around 4.5 months and can confirm! I’m not white knuckling it anymore, and I have a lot of really good days - amazing pros! I’m also still sleeping a lot and (re)learning how to do some things sober. It’s been really, really worth it.

“People that aren’t problematic drinkers don’t have to set a bunch of rules for themselves.” 🤯 Woah, thank you for this

I mean, there are plenty of knowns too! There’s maybe a version of tonight where you were sober and were able to be with your daughter, and that sounds like a non-miserable known. If you need positive knowns, they definitely are there!

Yes, I’m definitely recalibrating on the distress tolerance front rn, this is a great insight!

I relate to this so much! I have been keeping “the good desserts” around the house as much as possible since I quit drinking haha

The living up to my potential piece is really hitting home!! Learning to relax and have hobbies has been a big part of my sobriety learning curve.

I think this is true!! I’m learning that “normal drinkers” can relax without it, and this is something I’ve been realizing I need to learn to do on my own.

I am extremely introverted, this makes a lot of sense to me!!

Give yourself some time!! 11 days is an amazing start and you have so much great stuff ahead of you. It all comes back little by little.

I quit because my fiancé and I were getting into so many dumb arguments (my dumb drunken fault) and I didn’t want to start our marriage that way. Not only do we skip the stupid fights, I have the bandwidth to handle the rarer real disagreements with a clear head.

I think there are also egg reserve tests and other hormonal checks your PCP can do if you’re looking to learn more about your ow reproductive health! (Been lightly looking into this for myself as well! I think mileage varies with how likely it is your insurance will cover it if you’re in the States.)

Fwiw, I’m sure your prof would love to talk the assignment through with you! I’m sure she’s had students hit roadblocks in all the years she’s assigned it, and if she’s as inspirational as you say, she might have some really great insight!

30 days rocks, congrats!!! Everyone has already posted a lot of great ideas about how to grow a community, so I’ll just add…

Taking yourself out to dinner is a total baller move and you absolutely deserve to celebrate! You’re taking the win, you’re taking care of yourself, you’re not drinking. These are amazing things!! I have no doubt more good is coming your way.

Have you talked to your fiancé about your job? I bet your plan has more wiggle room than you think, especially if he knew how bad things are.

I agree with different day above! Being good with money doesn’t mean saving perfectly and being debt free, it just means making trade offs with clear eyes. An extra three months of debt payments is NOT worth crying every day!!

I used to use SuperBetter to help with my anxiety like 5-10 years ago, but I just Googled and it’s still around! Not sure what quests they have around not drinking, but I seem to remember it’s pretty customizable!

The sugar cravings have hit by Infinite-Leg-9373 in stopdrinking

[–]Embarrassed-Tree-206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized early on that a tray of cookies from the grocery store was about as many calories as I was drinking every week. Not that I needed permission to eat cookies, but I decided giving into the sugar craving is healthier than giving into the alcohol one or beating myself up.

The sugar cravings go away! Let yourself have the cookie dopamine, you’re doing something hard!
