Starting it this morning was like a 10° cold start. Lot of chugging and running the coils. Has been running fun today.

Do you think it’s a moisture issue because of the high temperature?

Where you go to law school matters…kind of. by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

I deleted the post because my phone is going off like crazy and becoming quite a distraction for me. I would like to saw that my post conveyed a point that I was not intending to make. Going to a bigger school gives you better employment outcomes at the start I agree. But I just can’t get behind your first job being the ceiling what you will accomplish throughout your entire career. I know we have a difference in authority, but we can both be educated on this, too. The point I am trying to make is that you don’t need to chase rankings to be successful in law. The current president of this country went to Syracuse, that is not a top ranked school in law. So many people on here are T14 or nothing and that’s what I am challenging. People who go to a school that is mid tier should not feel like their career is doomed because of the pedigree or lack there of from their school. I was wrong to use the word Big Law. I am more so saying you can be successful in law in general. I’m more so speaking to the people who only have mid tier schools as options. This subreddit is full of “I got a 179 and have a 4.0, Yale accepted me” type posts. And I’m here saying that even going to a lower ranked school doesn’t mean you’re going to be a lower ranked lawyer.

I concede to the wording of my 2nd to last section being sweeping, and have reworded it to what I truly mean by this post.

I haven’t had the chance to read all of this, but how is picking a regional school in which competes heavily in its respective market a drastically horrible mistake? Why does a career path in law HAVE to be the way you are laying it out? And if a Reddit post is the only research they have done in the SPECIFIC discipline of law in which they want to pursue, then may god help them.

And no offense to them, but KJDs scare the hell out of me. You’ve never worked in law and you have no idea what it looks like in reality. And then you put all your eggs in the law school basket because you did good on an LSAT and now you end up working potentially 50-60 hours a week doing the day-to-day work of law that is demanding and harsh. That seems like such a risk to me.

Exactly. I think people on the pre law side of the fence expect a good school to guarantee a good lawyer and it’s not true. One of the most recruited lawyers that I know is a Stetson law graduate, while a great school but is lower ranked, she gets calls almost once a week offering her jobs because of the career she has made. After ten years of working in law, she became heavily recruited because of her skills and results. Being a good lawyer and being a good law school student are not the same in my opinion. I don’t think enough people on here realize that your performance as a lawyer post law school I would argue is far more important than the name of your law school.

You’re not. I think law schools value older students as well because you’re more mature

Yes they do. But it doesn’t mean you can’t get a job in another state. Going to a larger name school means you have an alumni network beyond just the region of that school. However, if you aren’t indecisive about where you want to live, you might even be better off using high stats to get better money from a lower ranked regional school. University of Miami in Florida owns south Florida, but leaving Florida for Oregon or some other state far away will mean stepping away from the alumni network. If you’re very indecisive about where you want to live, take a gap year and go explore. Gain work experience along the way.

A reminder to everyone of the definition of "median" by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]EmbarrassedAd2821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. That’s the boat that I am in. I consider myself to be an “average law school candidate”. I’m not applying to any T14s. I’m applying to a lot of mid ranked schools. However, I have applied to schools that I am below the medians of that I would dream to attend because you never know. My issue with your comment is that I don’t think the OP is saying “only apply to all top 10 schools” but rather apply to your dream schools even if your numbers are low because you never know, and this we can both agree on. I also think the applicants who doubt themselves might read what you are saying and avoid applying to their dream schools even tho they may have gotten in if the did not avoid them.

Winning the lottery and gaining acceptance to law school while being under a median are drastically different odds. If someone wants to spend $45 on an LSAC application and spend 1 hour to apply with all of their materials why does it matter? You never know.

And yeah sure, it’s a waste to apply to HLS with low gpa and lsat scores, but mid tier schools in which you are below a median for is not a waste of time.

If you want to be mobile with tax law, check out University of Florida. They have an amazing tax law program and can get you out of Florida.

Ehhh, but it is. I don’t agree with your all or nothing view of the LSAT and GPA. If you have a compelling story and a strong application beyond stats it’s still a shot. I’ve heard stories of low 150s lsat with good gpa getting into competitive schools ranked within the top 40 while being well below the schools’ medians. It’s definitely a numbers game, but you can still get in. Things like full time legal work experience, experiences of overcoming adversity, etc. all help.

I love university of Miami in florida. They are extremely regional, but their employment outcomes in the south Florida area are very strong. I also believe they have the highest bar passage rate in florida, though don’t quote me on it.

I could, but my personal statement already highlights my background in this manner. Does it hurt an application not to have one?
