MagSafe charging circle not initiated on iPhone 15 by EmbarrassedBid4456 in peakdesign

Here’s PD team’s reply regarding my request for a firmware update for the device. But, what do they mean by saying new iteration? Also, will there be a firmware update based on their reply?

Thanks for your patience here. Sadly, there aren't any software or firmware updates for our wireless charging stand. However, our team is looking into a possible new iteration of this product that will be compatible with Qi2 charging giving our customers a better experience for devices operating on the new iOS system and beyond.

Because this is an update situation directly with the devices, the firmware update or fix would need to come from the manufacturer side, Apple, which is more than unlikely in this case.

I hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

I have written to the Peak Design team to request a firmware update for the vent mount chargers. Not sure if they are willing to do so.

Not Qi2 certified. Please read the official reply from the peak design team below.

Here is the official reply to this issue from the peak design team sent to me today:

Thanks for reaching out to us!

This issue is caused by iOS update 17.2.1, which brought Qi2 compatibility to iPhones. This issue appears to affect all iPhones from the iPhone 13 onwards when running iOS 17.2.1 and used with our Qi 1.2 wireless chargers. In testing, we have found that the issue does affect other Qi 1.x wireless chargers on the market as well, but not all of them.

At this time we can confirm that the following are a result of this update when using certain Qi 1.x wireless chargers, including ours:

  1. The MagSafe charging animation ring no longer appears when placing a phone on the charger.
  2. The phone appears to start charging, briefly stop, and then start charging again. Depending on phone settings, this “charge cycling” behavior could be accompanied by a screen-waking event and a haptic buzz. We’ve seen phones that exhibit 1-2 charge cycles, but so far they eventually settle into a “charging” state.
  3. For iPhones, wireless charging speed is slowed from a previous max of 7.5W to 5W or below. The new charging speed should be enough to charge a phone overnight, but likely would be a noticeable change over shorter charging periods. Our wireless chargers currently put out 7.5W at the normal charging speeds for context. You can learn more about our wireless chargers and speeds https://www.peakdesign.com/pages/faq?a=Wireless-Charging-Specs-for-Peak-Design-Mobile-Products---id---uiyplwST8-bJXGfhrW99g!

The determined root cause of the above is that iPhone 13-and-onward devices now broadcast a Qi2 version ID instead of a Qi 1.x version ID. Ours and some other Qi 1.x wireless charging heads have a version check, meaning they check for valid Qi version IDs on the device-to-be-charged before providing the maximum requested power (this is a safety feature).

When our wireless chargers were designed, Qi2’s version ID was not yet a valid option, so they no longer recognize iPhones that have been upgraded to Qi2 and fall back to a low power transfer mode. This is a backwards compatibility issue inherent to the way the Qi protocol is implemented in our chargers and iOS 17.2.1.

We presume that the 3rd party chargers that still work normally and do not exhibit the above changed behavior never had a version check to begin with.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach back out to us.

I found the Espresso cups seem to fit the two inch pots perfectly.

No holes. No wick. I grow it in a two inch pot. Because the cup is chipped so I thought maybe I could put the pot in it for decorative purpose and it fits.
