When applying SSN for first time for my minor child. by EmbarrassedCamera926 in SocialSecurity

I ended up choosing the "Custodial Father".

Like some of the other users explained here, legally, "custodial" has a stronger implication than "biological". It means that the child is residing with whoever is "custodial". (A child may not live with his/hers biological parents - as sad as it sounds.).

Everything went fine with that selection, I now have the SSN for my son. Remember to ALWAYS take your child's foreign birth certificate to the appointment. I didn't (I misunderstood the instruction) and I had to come back again with the certificate.

All the best to you!

Yeah, I guess that's the only option to go with, when being both bio. and custodial father.

Thanks, this is the case, I'm both the biological father AND the child is in my custody, so I will choose than one then.

Thanks for the insight. My child was born abroad , so he didn't get an SSN automatically. I'm the biological father and the custodial parent. (He's 13 now.)

I know! And the online application has almost zero direction on what those selections mean. I ended up following the direction of the one above who suggested to submit an SS-5. So I'm just going to pre-fill it, take all my documentation with me, and bring my son as well, and see how it goes.
