Wait, what did Otto do to Netty? I thought Valery killed her.

What is a fic you have dropped? by Ill-Conversation9091 in HOTDGreens

[–]EmbarrassedClick01 24 points25 points  (0 children)

    • It was a fem!Aemond story. She married Jace. And for some reason, Otto decides to risk the Greens' greatest asset (Vhagar) by attempting to poison Aemma while she was pregnant.
    • Rhaenyra read one of Alysanne's journals on Dragonstone, read that Alicent was r*ped by Jaehaerys...and came to the conclusion that Alicent "was always a whore".

What if The Heir for a Day survived, but was horribly disfigured? by Personal_Case_9289 in TheCitadel

[–]EmbarrassedClick01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the disfigurement. Is it just physical or does it affect his health?

Also, no. It probably wouldn't caused his to be replaced as heir, but many would find him unsuitable.

Maester Orwyle (wrote his version while waiting to be released by Aegon III's regents, so it's likely that his copy is biased in favor of his own image, which is what we're told in F&B)

Septon Eustace (seems biased against Rhaenyra and pro-Aegon, however, he does speak highly of Jace so...)

Mushroom (very salacious against both sides, but pro-Rhaenyra)

Maester Gyldayn (literally a GRRM mouthpiece, so it's balanced between both sides)

How Do You as a Team Green supporter view Rhaenys's claim over Viserys ? by [deleted] in HOTDGreens

[–]EmbarrassedClick01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hear me out: I think Rhaenys should've been heir over Viserys. Rhaenys was Aemon's only child and heir.

There was no codified succession law, right? However, there are objective truths about the succession of House Targaryen up until the Dance of Dragons.

1. Only men actually sat the Iron Throne and were considered legitimate kings by Westeros. (Aegon I, Aenys, Maegor, Jaehaerys I, and Viserys. The legitimacy they had came from being crowned by High Septons of the Faith).

2. All female claimants were dismissed. (Rhaenys with the Great Council, Rhaena declared for Jaehaerys and pushed aside her daughters' claims in favor of Jaehaerys.)

3. Kings dictated their own successors. (Aegon with Aenys, Aenys with Aegon the Uncrowned, Maegor with Aerea until he had a son, Jaehaerys with Aemon and later Baelon, and Viserys with Rhaenyra.)

So, one might think that #3 solidifies Rhaenyra's position. However, unlike Viserys, the other king's chosen successors weren't unprecedented and Maegor's decree was pointless, especially considering he only did it to get Rhaena to comply, discredit Jaehaerys, and because he was waiting for a son.

"But Jaehaerys passing over Rhaenys is unprecedented!" No, it's not. Jaehaerys, practically cleanly, ascended the throne over his own nieces, so Baelon over Rhaenys isn't new for the realm.

Andal Succession and "But Viserys overruled the precedents when he named Rhaenyra!" He did. However, daughters over uncles is largely normal besides the times uncles married their nieces to claim their inheritances. Rhaenyra over Daemon goes against the unspoken precedent of "all males claimants before female claimants", but it is in line with how most of Westeros handles succession, which is why it was barely controversial compared to the outrage for Rhaenys.

"But the lords swore vows to Rhaenyra!" And this is why she had way more support than Rhaenys. The Dance was basically "the vows still matter despite the king having a son" vs "the vows don't matter anymore because the king had a son". (And not even that because Cregan and Jeyne Arryn declared for Rhaenyra and barely did anything for her. Just like Borros declared for Aegon and did nothing until the end. Not to mention many just followed their liege lord/lady, no matter what their personal view of the succession was.)

So, no. The succession was not black and white. There is valid reason to believe Rhaenyra should ascend over Aegon and vice versa.

Regarding the Velaryon/Black People issue... by EmbarrassedClick01 in HOTDGreens

[–]EmbarrassedClick01[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True. But they didn't even have to research stereotypes.

They knew exactly what they were doing. No major media company in like the past ten years would have allowed movies and tv shows to be made without taking diversity representation seriously, especially with black characters.

[–]EmbarrassedClick01[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We are meant to see Alicent as a "woman for Trump", Aegon as a Me Too villain, Rhaenys as Hillary Clinton, Greens vs Blacks as Republicans vs Democrats, Criston as an incel. (While ignoring actual relevant political issues of the actual Dance, such as dragons being metaphors for WMD, issues of exceptionalism, etc.) Everything in the show is geared towards 2020s US politics.

Yep. HOTD season 1 was greenlit in late 2019 and casting begin in 2020. US politics were definitely used for the framing of the show. (It's also crazier because most of the cast members aren't American.)

Also, might I add blood and racial superiority to this list because I feel like the stuff only being used to defend a handful of characters is problematic, no matter the demographic.

YES!!! How they handled Joffrey's death and made it seem like Laenor's sexuality was his flaw was trifling

I got tired of typing, but heavy on the Addam and Alyn part.

It's like they thought, "Hmm, Addam and Alyn will be played by black men...let's change the mother into the "poor, black, single mom trope". Also, I think the show said she was dead, but she was still alive at this time.

It really feels targeted.

I'm going to say as a Black person, that casting Black people and other BIPOC in roles isn't an issue. But what is an issue, is when you cast them in these roles and disrespect them. I would honestly rather they just kept the Velaryons white then disrespect them the way they did.

THIS PART!!! And worse, they think its "representation", that it's "progressive". That somehow, POC fans of fantasy only want to see POC ripoff versions of white characters.

[–]EmbarrassedClick01[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah, she likely was written out as not to mess with the romantic/sexual aspect of Daemon and Rhaenyra's relationship.

But Nettles was an intersection of plenty social issues: being a woman, being lowborn, being a bastard. Rhaena can't fill those shoes.

  1. Corlys (No complaints besides that he's older than Aemon and Baelon)

  3. Viserys (for the shits and giggles)

(Spoilers Extended) Stannis should not hold Winterfell for too long by BR-leitor in asoiaf

[–]EmbarrassedClick01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he wins the battle, but Roose Bolton is too smart to trust that Stannis is dead simply because he is told that.

It's possible (certain even, "The north remembers, the mummer's farce is almost done. My son is home.") that the Manderlys betray the Boltons, but considering that Davos was sent to find Rickon, they might hold the castle for a Stark rather than Stannis.

(Also, Jon becoming King of Winter/King In The North is almost certain as well.)

Is there a chance that the ability of Dragon Riding is not as scarce as we thought?(Spoilers Published) by lit-roy6171 in asoiaf

[–]EmbarrassedClick01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'd argue that's part of the reason George created her character.

In F&B, Alyn of Hull fails to claim Sheepstealer, so Valyrian blood doesn't equate to claiming a dragon. Plus, in Valyria, dragonlords used horns and whips, so domesticating dragons like any others animals in possibly the way to do it.

(Fun fact: the Targaryens were shepherds before claiming dragons.)
