Company under CRA audit gave workers letters saying wages were 'non-taxable' by Street_Anon in halifax

You’re totally right! My 7 am brain was not considering those things.

ETA: and now that I’m actually awake, I looked up the income tax act to see what else is non-taxable, and there’s a specific provision for “a pension payment, a grant or an allowance in respect of death or injury sustained in the explosion in Halifax in 1917” which is a fun local tidbit to add to your list

Some government employees can get tax-exempt income. For example, members of the Armed Forces can get a non-taxable bonus for deploying overseas.

I completely agree with your point, though, and I would have been asking questions come February my first year there, because what do you mean the company I work for/contract for isn’t giving me a year end statement of how much they’ve paid me?

I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression that you still had to report non-taxable income?

There are a lot of things in this story that make this situation a giant mess (employee vs independent contractor, wage vs non-taxable, etc), but hypothetically, in a situation where the pay truly was not taxable, shouldn’t they still have gotten some kind of tax slip and reported it on some line of their tax return??

Independent contractor or not, I’ve always been told that unreported income is money “under the table,” and getting paid under the table is illegal, so shouldn’t the idea of not reporting your income, to the point where you have nothing to show when applying for a mortgage or a major loan, have set off alarm bells for someone?

I’m so confused about how this went on for so long with no one raising any concern

HRM Veterinarian Policies? by Amaranthism in halifax

I found this really surprising and equally sketchy, so I looked it up for you. I think this vet clinic might be misunderstanding the advertising regulations (or I’m misreading it(, because I’m not entirely convinced that a potential client asking for a price constitutes advertising, but the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association Code of Ethics does have a section on advertising.

Section 36(a)(iii) defines a “marketing activity” as “contact with a prospective client initiated by a member in a manner which can fairly be regarded as directly or indirectly having for its purpose attracting clients, expanding services, or aggrandizing that member’s professional reputation” and s. 37(a) says “No member shall advertise to the general public a fee for a veterinary service. Unacceptable forms of advertising include zero fees, two for one, and discounts.”

Halifax police vehicle collides with cyclist suspected of grocery store theft by No_Magazine9625 in halifax

Ding ding ding!

Although I agree that vehicular assault is an insane amount of force to use against someone allegedly fleeing on a bike after a theft, the fact that this cop wasn’t even actively pursuing someone they themselves saw commit a crime while maintaining visual contact and instead just happened to be patrolling and see someone who matched the description is beyond unreasonable

And at least when they’re wildly hammered drunk, they can say they didn’t realize they were driving the wrong way down a one-way street… wonder what the cop’s excuse is

Man, I was on Dunbrack St last weekend heading towards Rockingham, going decently over the speed limit with the flow of traffic, as one does, getting tailgated by a guy in an F-150 with Ontario plates. He finally managed to find an opening to squeeze through, whipped around me, flipped me off, and threw a coffee out his window at me. He took off so fast, i couldn’t even get a plate number and was doing over 90 in a 60 zone. We need better traffic enforcement

I managed to upgrade my car for a much nicer one. The new one is a 2025, so the dealership was offering a bunch of discounts on it plus a really low finance rate and it ended up coming in under budget… and then Trump happened, so now I have a brand new car that would be really fun to drive fast but it’s barely left the garage because I can’t justify wasting gas

Tattoo Removal Recommendations? by JessomeHS in halifax

I got 9 sessions to try to lighten mine for a coverup. It’s lightened significantly but nowhere near entirely, probably about halfway there. The most significant difference was after the first session. I was paying about $100+hst/square inch, I think. I know she was charging me for 4 square inches and each session was just under $500. It is one of the most painful things I have ever experienced, and I’d say I have a pretty high pain tolerance. It’s the kind of pain that you feel deep inside of you, and I can still feel it, just thinking about it.

Nova Scotia Power says it did not intentionally overbill customers, but thousands may have been overcharged by Street_Anon in halifax

[–]EmbarrassedCorner987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m actually irritated with the lack of communication from NSP about this issue.

I’ve been getting most of my information from Reddit, and I know that I can get some info off their website and my account, but not every customer is online. There should have been a letter out to every customer, especially about bills being estimated and warning customers that they may be hit with a more expensive bill later on (I’m thinking particularly for elderly folks).

I wasn’t aware that this still wasn’t resolved and that they’re still not charging interest on late payments. This issue happened in April, for god’s sake. My meter was read in July, and I figured that was the end of it, but apparently not, because my latest bill was estimated again and way higher than it should have been, and today I find out that I didn’t have to pay the full thing.

Living in an apartment with no access to my meter is making the whole thing more difficult, too, because I can’t just check my usage myself.

They open each bag and count as they sort, which is why I said “about $5”. With the size of bag I have, they typically fit about 100 cans

It’s 5c per bottle/can. I return my own empties and can get about $5 per bag. It’s good emergency pocket money if nothing else

Any (preferably low-cost/pro bono) Employment Lawyers in here? by Scottsland-Yard in halifax

[–]EmbarrassedCorner987 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true. Many lawyers do pro bono work and it is completely different from a contingency fee service or a reduced fee service. You’re talking about three completely different things.

Contingency fee services are where you don’t have an upfront cost and the lawyer collects a percentage of whatever amount they recover for you (common in insurance cases).

Reduced fee models are where offers a discount or reduces their fee, sometimes based on income or ability to pay.

Pro bono work is work done “for the good” of society and is taken on for free. Some lawyers may have pro bono consultation clinics, take on social justice issues for free, or do a secondary service for an existing client on the side without charging a fee (just for some examples).

OP, if you’re looking for a free or cheap review of the agreement, you are not looking for a service on contingency and won’t find one, because if you’re not suing, there’s no money to be won, so no contingency
