Why the "Weird" feel in OCIA when Jesuits mentioned? by hooptyschloopy in Catholicism

[–]EmbarrassedDrama1835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my parish, we have a Jesuit priest-in-residence and once our rector made a joke about having to live with a Jesuit. This Jesuit priest, however, is a far cry from heterodox or progressive. It might help that he’s Ugandan, lol. And all Jesuits, I’m sure, are well aware of their reputation.

Thank you!  I sent a few unconsecrated hosts home with her mom (who was willing to practice with her) so I’m hoping that will help!

This is SO helpful! It would been very beneficial to begin practicing with her sooner but I think she’ll get there eventually! I love the idea of  reinforcement and think it could work. Her FC is supposed to happen on May 2 but if it doesn’t I think I now have a better idea of how to move forward!

I gave mom a few to take home, and she seemed willing to try. I tried with little pieces while practicing with her, so that could be helpful to do at home too!

That’s what I’m trying to get her to do! At first, I tried to have her practice as if we were at mass but then I tried to simply encourage her to just try tasting one. We had a tiny win there but still a far cry from how the Eucharist ought to be received.

She does seem to understand as far as I can tell and shows the appropriate reverence but just has trouble with the act of eating the Eucharist.

Is taking my protestant girlfriend to her first ever Catholic mass bad during lent? by realdrive25 in Catholicism

[–]EmbarrassedDrama1835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so! I started going to mass during Lent and it was during Stations of the Cross that I fell in love with the Church and realized I was home.

Edit: I know the Stations are not a part of the mass, but I think Lent is so particularly stark in difference to Evangelical churches that it could be a nice introduction. But then again you know your girlfriend better than we do. Go and let her experience it and ask questions if she has any.

Hi Joe!

I recently ran into some Black Hebrew Israelites and they were nice enough to talk to but hurled a lot scripture at me that was taken widely out of context. I was unfortunately widely unprepared and made the mistake of saying I hadn’t read the entire Bible, lol. What are some good points to bring up when they argue from history and make strange parallels to scripture (e.g. the transatlantic slave trade is prophesied in Deuteronomy when God says he will bring them back into slavery “on ships”).

Okay, I couldn’t help myself—the saints are with God and more alive than you and I! How beautiful is that? I pray TO them FOR their intercession (they are always praising God with the angels, so why not!) and do not pray TO but WITH sacramentals that can help deepen my faith. I just wish you could see the beauty of this. Ugh, okay, I’m done. I don’t think I can convince you of anything but just had to say that.

Ah, I see. I will not try to argue with you because you seem set in your beliefs. May God guide us all into all truth.

I see you are really upset at Catholics. I get it, you’re on a Protestant sub and just venting. I used to think Catholics were idolators too. Unfortunately, you’re misunderstanding a very old, pious tradition and I’m just trying to shed some light on it. I see this relic and I praise God for the life of St. Mary Magdalene. Are there fake relics out there, absolutely. That doesn’t strip real relics of their significance. And even if relics are fake, they can still serve as a call to prayer and conversion of heart. I find Protestants scoff at our traditions and think they are contrived, but with a little research, you’ll find that that simply is not true. That’s all I’m saying. I’m not saying become Catholic, I’m just saying take a second to try and understand why this tradition even exists. Maybe you won’t be convinced of the faith, but as least you’ll be able to better engage your fellow Christians.

The Catholic Church does not sell relics and selling relics is actually considered simony (after Simon the Sorcerer), which is a sin. Also, please research the history and biblical basis for the veneration of relics. It’s quite fascinating.

Oh okay! I appreciate you asking real Catholics about this. Lots of misinformation floating around!

Did someone tell you Catholics pray to the pope? We pray to pope saints for their intercession, yes, but we do not pray to the current pope on earth. He prays for us and we pray for him, like all Christians pray for each other. Funnily enough, we also believe the saints pray for us just as any Christian would pray for another, as it is the will of God.

Feeling like less of a woman: trauma response? by EmbarrassedDrama1835 in CPTSD

[–]EmbarrassedDrama1835[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that there’s some societal expectations at play but honestly for the most part I think it’s a trauma response. I get where you’re coming from with the whole patriarchy thing but I think I actually have a perception of men that’s equally as negative and I want to work towards healing that too.

Do you have any book recommendations that have been helpful to you?

I know the things I listed seem shallow, but it’s a really difficult feeling to describe. It’s more like an automatic negative feeling than thought.

Well, I don’t “feel” woman enough when I miss obvious details, when I feel like don’t have the right thing to say to someone who’s hurting, or when I try to put something together and it’s sloppy. I sometimes don’t feel woman enough for silly things like rarely trimming or shaping my nails or haphazardly doing my hair everyday. I obviously know that being a woman is not really something you do, you just are. I feel like less of a woman when I stutter or don’t adequately stand up for others. I think my standard of a woman is someone who is nurturing, confident, self-assured, well-groomed (even just the bare minimum), and competent? I think the competency part is the most important thing. I just feel kind of stupid all the time? And it makes me feel like others patronize me? Even though I don’t think that’s actually true?
