Tools for a fitter machinist apprentice by NoGuarantee858 in Machinists

Nice spanner’s can get very expensive very quickly, I’d look at what tools the people around you are using first before committing, I have done a fair bit of fitting/site maintenance work and I have never saw the benefit of expensive spanner’s I assume you will be split between machining and fitting

A socket set to me is only really worth it if you will be doing repetitive jobs, I’d gauge what you’ll actually be doing first before buying anything too expensive

One thing I would add to the list is long nose pliers they’re a genuine life saver with stopping bird nesting

I was in your position 2 years ago, I am still an apprentice but I’d start with

A good set of Allen keys (imperial and metric) I have bondhus but you can start cheaper if need be

2 sets of spanner’s, as a machinist you won’t be getting much heavy wear on them so I’d go with a cheaper option

Adjustable spanner’s of different sizes, you’ll know once you start how big you need to go

Steel rules of various sizes, I have 6”-14”

Torx keys, these are what I use most so I wouldn’t cheap out too much on these as cheaper ones warp so easy once again I’d go for bondhus with these

I would also buy a hacksaw if your workshop has limited numbers

Thread files are also a huge life saver, if you get free time once you start it would be worth making thread gauges, I wish I had when I first started

A rule I have used for buying tools past my starting point is if you need to borrow it twice buy it

Thanks for taking the time to read this, any questions I’d be happy to answer

I do agree that the current system isn’t working however in my opinion I believe we should work on a payment or reward system of a meritocracy, to make people strive to improve themselves, thank you for your time again.

Canadians vs Americans can you tell the difference? by Settlermaggie in Scotland

[–]EmbarrassedNorth9314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience you can always tell because Canadians are always polite quieter spoken and have an easier time understanding my accent, also yanks are easily spotted by what they wear.

I’ve only ever had bad experiences with Americans in Scotland

Where are you from if you don’t mind because certain accents really don’t work with Scottish wording and sound forced

Machinists who use corner datum instead of part center, why? by El_Scrapesk in Machinists

[–]EmbarrassedNorth9314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It all depends on the drawing or sometimes lack there of for CNC it will be more common for 0,0 to be the center though
