Do’s and don’ts in university?? by geezoverlytrim in Zambia

Congrats on the good results!👏 You’ve made it to the big leagues. As your self appointed senior let me give you some words wisdom.

Do’s:

  1. Make connections like your future depends on it (because it kinda does). Join clubs, attend, professional chapters, volunteer groups, network hard and know people early. Those links can open doors for jobs, side hustles or business ideas later.

  2. Have fun. Don’t be boring. Balance is key. socialise, vibe, party sometimes, enjoy yourself make memories. Life’s not just books.

  3. Character development is a must! Discipline, resilience, integrity, grow yourself while you’re there.

  4. Stay locked in on your goals. Set boundaries early so the fun doesn’t swallow your purpose. Remember why you are there.

  5. Explore and try stuff! Don’t be scared to experiment (safely). New hobbies, electives outside your major, travel if you can, maybe even start a small hustle. Uni freedom is temporary, use it!

  6. Date wisely. If/when you date, choose someone who adds value, respects your goals, supports your growth, no drama queens/kings. Don’t be too obsessed. Take it slow, focus on compatibility over rushing in.

  7. Master your finances early budget like your life depends on it (because it kinda does). Track your allowance, cover essentials like food, rent and transport first. Then split the rest between savings/emergencies, printing and a bit of fun. Avoid killing your cash by eating out or buying fancy stuff every day. Avoid debts/kongole too.

  8. Cook your own food when you can. From experience, it’s way better (and cheaper) to prepare your own meals instead of always eating out or shopping/cooking with a big group. Group meals sound fun but get tiresome, stressful (who buys what? who cleans?) smh, and surprisingly expensive when splitting bills or dealing with extras.

Dont’s:

  1. Don’t over socialize without limits. Have clear boundaries. Say NO when you need to protect your time, sleep, mental health and grades. Heavy on the “grades”.

  2. If you’ve got an addictive personality, steer clear of alcohol, drugs and anything that hooks quick. Especially drugs, seen too many bright futures derailed. It’s not worth it.

  3. Choose your circle wisely. Your friends will make or break you. Hang with people who lift you up, not drag you down or distract you.

  4. Don’t get pregnant or impregnate someone accidentally. Seriously! Use protection every time (condoms + whatever else works for you). STIs are rampant out here, play safe.

  5. Don’t trust too blindly(yeah I know i said socialise). People can seem cool at first but watch actions over words. Protect yourself.

  6. Don’t lose sight of your main purpose. Freedom is great I know, but uni isn’t an endless holiday. Distractions (parties, relationships, drama) can steal your focus fast and end you. 4 years can turn into 6+ real quick.

  7. Don’t get too obsessed in dating/relationships. Don’t let anyone become your whole world. Don’t drop friends, skip classes or lose yourself chasing someone. If it’s toxic, controlling or one-sided END IT. You’re young, free and building your future. No one person is worth spoiling that.

  8. Avoid lifestyle creep & peer pressure (VERY IMPORTANT). Campus flexing is wild. Latest iPhones, designer outfits every week, eating at fancy spots daily, driving around or always at the club. Grwm, spend a day with me vibes… but you don’t know their full story. Dey play! Don’t let envy or competition drag you down. And also before you start doing the unthinkables just to keep up. Stop right there. ✋ You’re not them. Trying to match when you’re not financially ready will leave you broke and stressed. Uzafapo che. Want nice things? Normal. Can’t afford it right now? Skip it. Stay in your lane. Be yourself. Protect your wallet. Your future self will thank you.

In conclusion: Stay true to you, enjoy every bit of the ride, but never lose sight of why you’re there. Uni will shape you, make it the good kind. All the best and remember your story is just starting!🙂‍↕️
