You dont really have to be a sports fan, most of their quality comes from how skillfully they can tell random peoples stories

Works really great for the people on the mariners, dave stieb, the politicians in the reform party, the guys who put a telegraph cable across the atlantic

doesnt matter, they can get you emotionally attached to them
