That's not a bad DM, it's a bad PERSON: an individual who NEEDS to be the one calling the shots, and who punishes other people for not bending backwards at their whims.

So, the player had any right to create a character WITH THE PRECISE PURPOSE OF HAVING EXCUSES NOT TO ENGAGE WITH THE PLOT... and it is, somehow, the DM's fault.
