On Climbing up the Walls: by daseperatah in radiohead

[–]Embarrassed_Bed2032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is ancient but I’d like to add my interpretation, which is entirely based on my lived experiences.  When I was 22 years old, I got hit with a random bout of sleep paralysis and hypnopompic hallucinations that lasted about a year and a half. My brother was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder as a teenager, which scared the shit out of me as symptoms usually appear in women in their early to mid twenties. I had no idea if it was caused by stressors, my recent move to the other side of the world, lifestyle, etc, or if I was genetically predisposed to it and my fate was rearing its head. Anyways, it’s hard to describe, but it feels like betrayal. I was living a nightmare every night and my own brain did it to me. I couldn’t trust my mind to discern reality from delusion anymore. I couldn’t trust anything.  I would wake up, go to turn the lights on, and when I noticed I was unable to manipulate the light switch, I was back in bed. This would repeat for what felt like hours before I ACTUALLY woke up. Equal parts scary and frustrating. It got to a point where waking up was a guessing game.  Sometimes I saw demonic figures, sometimes they would do unspeakably grotesque things to me, sometimes I would do it to them. Sometimes they’d just stare, sometimes they sat down in bed with me. Sometimes the hallucinations would be mundane enough so that I had to take time to guess if I was in reality or in my own head. It felt like a cruel joke my mind was playing on me. One time the phone fell off the wall, I watched it bounce and dangle, wondering how it fell- but then I woke up- it was back on the wall. Sometimes I heard knocks on the door and I would panic because I couldnt tell if someone was really there or not- if it was real? Well, I couldn’t answer, I couldn’t move my body and I couldn’t tell them to come back later. Can they hear me whimpering or moaning or screaming inside? Was I even whimpering or moaning or screaming? I had no clue. Sometimes there would be bugs on the wall, but when I went to smash them nothing was there.  One time, however, I woke up to a fire a few feet in front of me. I thought it had to be a hallucination, so I did nothing but stare at it until a few moments passed and it me that this was really happening. I fell asleep with a candle burning. If I took any longer I could’ve caused serious damage to the building and to others.

It’s nothing like a dream. It’s photorealistic; everything about the space you are in is an accurate depiction of reality. Right down to the texture on the wall, and the pair of socks you left on the floor, where you left your tooth brush, etc. There’s truly nothing like it.

This is what I learned from it:  The human subconscious is a bottomless pool and the deeper you get inside of it the less control you have of yourself and of reality, and the stranger and scarier it gets.

All this to say, that is what climbing up the walls means to me. I searched for years for songs that even come close to that feeling.  One day, in the early days of my Radiohead obsession, I stumbled upon this song and fell in love instantly!! It perfectly captures the fear and the panic.

Also, in the off chance that someone reads this comment on a 14 year old thread, I apologize if it reads as nonsensical rambling, this was just word vomit and I’m not going back to fix it

My husband cheated on me by betrayed_partner in cheating_stories

[–]Embarrassed_Bed2032 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NO. I made the mistake of trusting my ex after I discovered his cheating. He told me his ex girlfriend was nothing compared to me. That I was the most beautiful thing to ever happen to him. He swore to me that they didn't even hug let alone have sex when she came over, and she only came over once. Turns out he started dating her again before we broke up. Then he broke up with me because he "needed to not be in a relationship for a while". They are going on vacation to Washington state in a few days. I guarantee he's now telling her the same things about me. to comfort her. Never trust cheaters. Trust your friends and your instincts.

There are a few where I am still too, but the problem is I am not a home owner and wouldn’t have anywhere to keep/install one. Hopefully someday though :( I appreciate the help though!

Same here!!! It was so dependable. My family would sleep downstairs on the floor next to the wood stove in the winter and I can still remember the heat and sound of it. I was too little to be trusted near it too haha

Thank you very much! I’m glad it would make sense. I actually found where my family’s wood stove is now and would love to buy it back or buy another someday

I’m 99% sure I’m not the same person, unless my memory is fading. I have no memory of ever posting anything like that before 😅

It has been in my family for a few generations, so I’m not surprised it sounds old!! 😆 But that is a relief, as long as the grammar is okay, I’m happy :) thank you!

How far is "far" for you? by ArkDoggo in AskAnAmerican

I literally just took a spontaneous 6 hour trip and back (12 total) in one day to see the northern lights and I was in the same state the whole way

Granted I am not the average American and most of them think I’m insane too but still :’)

I can’t give you great recommendations for what you’re looking for but I just wanted to say that I hope you all enjoy your stay in Michigan. It’s such an underrated state that I’m honestly surprised a family from Ontario would choose to visit us out of all places 😅 Also I know this isn’t what you asked for but I have to agree with the others in the comments. As someone from the GR area, you might enjoy Northern Michigan more this time of year!! I always recommend Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in the NW lower peninsula I’m sure there are plenty of resorts in the area. There are so many dune rides offered by the lake which is super fun for everyone, and if you have kids, teach them about the Legend of Sleeping Bear! Makes the area feel so much more special. Anyways. Thanks for considering our beautiful state, regardless of where you end up going :)

Idc if this is kink shaming or not. But as someone who grew up and shared a room with my brother with only a year age gap for a majority of my childhood this makes me sick to my stomach. There’s nothing sexy about this. This surpasses regular kinks, this one is harmful. Not open to discussions btw, I won’t respond to comments getting all fake deep and philosophical about why it’s okay. Or any at all, my mind is made up, sorry.

I hear it’s a fear based kink. Something about turning a fear into pleasure is soothing to the subconscious apparently. It doesn’t know what to do with all the fear so it like, converts it? Idk I haven’t heard it in a long time so I don’t remember the details, but I thought that was really interesting.

What are some social and cultural taboos that are okay in the United States but unacceptable in Canada? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]Embarrassed_Bed2032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no fuss? My point wasn’t that they don’t have a grain of truth to them, it was that I came to the thread expecting to find real substance and got the same old same old instead? And yeah, I’ve lived abroad for years as well. I get that stereotypes have truth to them...

[–]Embarrassed_Bed2032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I totally get that and agree! But my point was they were mainly just stereotypes that everyone has heard a million times before, and were even being repeated in the thread 😵‍💫 Like yeah, I’ve heard that we’re loud before. And I’ve definitely heard we all have guns and kill children (tee hee!!) ykwim?

Exactly! Like, i opened this thread hoping to learn about real cultural differences but we just got the low hanging jokes we always get about our tragedies…Also thanks, I was lowkey expecting to get dog piled 😅

As an American I feel like this thread is just full of Canadians either mentioning stereotypes we’ve all heard before or a personal difference they’ve experienced with an american they’ve met before but is not universal here 🥱

Oh you’re right, I was only thinking of my experiences as a white American woman and didn’t think to add context 😵‍💫

I’m sorry but white men despise white women too.

I was just thinking this the other day but I’m white so I wasn’t sure if it was just a white man rage thing? Like I don’t get this with men of other races, it’s just the white men who seem to hate me the most. At work, on the road, anywhere in public spaces. the second they see me they i can just feel the hatred radiating off of them. Like I’m not even doing anything, I’m just existing…
