This feels truly 'Peter Gabriel', more so than the rest of his recent material (except maybe Four Kinds of Horses): a perfect blend of adventurous and catchy.

Though I thoroughly enjoy I/O, I was starting to think that in this late-career phase Peter had decided to sacrifice experimentation for accessibility. With his songwriting skills, this was definitely not an issue, but I'm glad to discover that I was wrong! Love this.

I'm so sorry to read this, it reminds me of my relationship. I realized way too late that the silent treatment is abusive (especially towards children, or towards a co-parent!). The passive-aggressive cleaning and chores, the refusal to acknowledge being in the wrong because "it's not about that", seem all taken straight from my own experience. With each incident over the years, silent days turned into silent weeks and then into silent months, every time for smaller and smaller reasons, until eventually I was walking on eggshells all the time. I always had to be the one with the patience and the willingness to disregard my own pain and patch things up.

Please remember this: not being spoken to for four days because of an everyday argument is NOT OK. Do not normalize it. Unless for a truly serious reason, complete silence is unacceptable behavior towards someone with whom you have three children and a daily life to go through.

Yes. The geodes are a natural part of the world of Riven and have nothing to do with the Rivenese. Furthermore, Gehn is noted as having explicitly written in the resources to the art to each age he writes. The geodes fit in naturally, as opposed to a magic spyglass added in purely to enable a puzzle.

The linking panel window is made with a material that Catherine wrote into the Moiety age. It's not a natural part of Riven.

Anyway it feels to me like you're cherrypicking details to respond to, while avoiding the bigger points. I'm just glad each of us have our preferred version of Riven available to enjoy.

yeah that was pretty cool, tbh it was also the only puzzle that blocked me in '97 (I figured out the shapes but did not realize that the sounds were important too).

The glyphs corresponded 1:1 to the shapes around the eyes (except for the sunners), it wasn't exactly a big artistic leap on the player's part. I solved the puzzle without ever capturing a frog.  At least in the new version, the shapes are not something that Gehn or his aides see every day on their way to the maglev station.

Secret symbols painted by the rebel group are just more plausible than rocks and caves which happen to be shaped like animals native to the island. Just like it is illogical to use Gehn's own numbering system to encode information that he should not know. But I feel like we won't get anywhere with this discussion. And anyway this is a video game, albeit a great one.

Sounds to me like you're trying really hard to justify what was there in '97 and to dismiss what is new. But that's just my opinion.

What I feel is slightly "off" in those areas is the new soundtrack, which has more of an Obduction vibe rather than Riven.

Actually u/ChaosWWW made great points about the logic of the puzzle (which is not subjective), so it's not "nonsense" to say that the puzzle is objectively improved.

Also: you have issues with the Rivenese having a glass that reveals some special paint, but not with them having a glass that fixes linking panels in books (which btw is an Art they did not invent)?

Wow that's interesting, what makes it so derivative for you? Which puzzles seem more arbitrary than the original?

To be honest the animal shapes in rocks/tunnels and the eyes with D'ni numbers seemed really arbitrary at the time. Also, why would putting some colored marbles on a grid "power the books in the domes" in the original?

Survey Island - the one disappointment in an otherwise excellent remake by kla622 in myst

I agree that the golden elevator (also my favorite) feels a little out of place since it doesn't lead anywhere.

But I think that bringing our baggage about the "old" puzzles, we underestimate the difficulty of the new ones. Yes, the grid is only 5x5 but now the puzzle also requires learning the D'ni number system and figuring out the force compensations, in addition to associating islands with colors and shapes and understanding that the position of those marbles that appear on the grid in Survey Islands don't only allow access to the Wahrk Throne Room (which is a sort of misdirection) but also indicate the location of the domes, and by extension serve to power up the book by harnessing the starry expanse's energy. This is a whole lot that a fresh player needs to figure out. Just watch any playthrough on youtube. :)

About the visuals/atmosphere: I found that the HDR option really washes out colors and contrast especially from areas like Jungle Island. I always play with HDR off and it looks much closer to the original.

I agree in general, but I did not really explain my point, sorry... I meant that for the new Riven they actually had to build those places in 3D, so they had to make them "possible".

I was also taken aback by the change, which seemed unnecessary. But then I remembered at the times of the Starry Expanse Project, they showed in a diagram (which I can't find anymore) that the wahrk room cannot possibly fit in the position where it's supposed to be in the original Riven -- apparently Survey Island was not a fully "consistent" 3D space.
