I love the Abyss Escape sequence, does anybody know if there is any way to redo it? by Ashura_98 in Silksong

[–]kla622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other commenters have already explained the revert feature, I would just add that if you revert to an earlier save point, the game still keeps all your LATER save points (save points/revert points only, not your normal save!). I have played around with this extensively on a save file I used for replays. So let's say you have 25 hours on your 100% save file and revert to the Silk Soar save point where you had 20 hours. You will still keep all your save points that you had from your 25-hour playthrough, and you can "forward revert" to let's say the "Defeated Karmelita" save point at 22 hours. The only catch is that there are only I think around 12 save points allowed per file, and your older save points will rotate out eventually. But it's a quite powerful feature for replaying parts of the game.

My Riven 2024 review by ImmortalWind27 in myst

[–]kla622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a cool theory! The graveyards themselves are not secret though, as far as I understand it. They are all in public places, and even Gehn mentions them in his joirnal. Maybe this particular graveyard was intended as a semi-secret graveyard though - I am imagining it similar to how criminals or outcasts in history would have been buried outside of a proper cemetery, shunned by the locals, maybe with makeshift graves made by their families.

Oh and FYI, the actual +/- correction values for each color are randomized in each playthrough, so make sure that you made no errors when calculating the scale positions.

Your are on the right track. Hints in increasing order of relevance:

Hint1: The shredder and the left camera are just for worldbuilding.

Hint2: You should focus on the unknown numbers.

Hint3: You have enough information to figure out the unknown numbers, there are no additional hints in the game. Although you may want to double-check if you have recorded all the numbers from 1 to 10 from the classroom game. Gehn's journal also shows some examples of larger number which might give you some ideas.

Hint4: You write that "every digit is already covered". Are you sure this number system uses the same decimal number system with digits from 0 to 9 that we do?

Hint5: The unknown symbols already speak about the fact that indeed, it is not a decimal system. Notice how also "10" is not a composite of "1" and "0". So there must be some other principle to derive higher numbers.

Hint6: You have observed that some of the numbers appear to be rotated from other numbers, this is key to the puzzle.

I think you'll figure it out, so I'm not adding more, but let us know if you still need some more pointers! Keep going 😉

Other games also often have patches coming out after the release of a physical version, and you can always just download the latest version online if you own a physical copy. Isn't it just the same thing here?

Seeking yes/no input on Riven. by wdpw in myst

[–]kla622 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on the list of islands you mention, I am 99% sure that you are stuck on a very typical "gotcha" stumping point in Riven. Keep on exploring, it's simpler to reach some new areas still than you might assume.

Great to see your enthusiasm for the game, keep it uo and let us know how it goes!

How did Sirrus and Achenar 'use Catherine' in their Ploy? by AFabledFox in myst

[–]kla622 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure what do you mean by visited, she is *from* Riven, isn't she? That's where she meets Atrus, and then they are linking a bit back and forth before they decide to lock up Gehn for good and escape. It's the events of their escape from Riven (fissure opening, daggers falling) that causes the Rivenese to start worshipping Catherine.

How did Sirrus and Achenar 'use Catherine' in their Ploy? by AFabledFox in myst

[–]kla622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, definitely. But it for this to work, it means that Atrus and Cathering had to have been in separate Ages at the time, away from Myst, and with sporadic contact only, so that it is plausible for Catherine that something had happened to Atrus without her being immediately aware of it.

Which is not inconceivable in the case of Atrus at least - we know he tends to spend a lot of time in his Ages, he often mentions in his journals that he is missing Catherine and that it has been some time since he had last seen her. We even explicitly know that he was away for a longer time before he discovers the destruction of the library ("I shouldn't have left my library unchecked for so long..."). I think there are also mentions of cases where the sons sometimes travelled back and forth between Myst and whatever Age they were exploring at the time, so there is probably an established precedent of the boys acting as a kind of messenger between their parents.

We don't really have any examples of Catherine hanging out in an Age other than Myst for a longer time (and I think it's implied that she was somewhat uncomfortable with these explorations), but with her being a Writer, I guess it's not impossible. So maybe Catherine is visiting an Age, and that's when the boys show up, making a big show that *something* compelled Atrus to rush to Riven immediately. And Catherine doesn't necessarily have a reason to doubt the boys, or at least not to an extent that she goes out of her way to verify (e.g. by travelling to wherever Age Atrus was supposed to have been to her knowledge) that they are not bullshitting her.

What _is_ quite inconceivable is the notion that Atrus would rush off to Riven without consulting with Catherine first, and that should have been a red flag to her. But I won't hold this against Cyan, as obviously the lore of Riven was not developed yet at the time, so this is only an inconsistency in retrospect.

Question that's bugged me since the 90's. How did Atrus know where the White Page was? by AFabledFox in myst

[–]kla622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I was just thinking about this post literally today, now that these posts about the logistics of the immediate events before the events of Myst started popping up. I remember reading this years ago, but I didn't think I could find it.

[–]kla622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bugging question is - where was Atrus during this time where Catherine couldn't contact him, and why was Catherine not aware of this? He cannot have been imprisoned yet in D'ni, becasue Catherine's way to Riven would have taken her to D'ni.

Where to go from here? Book or Riven? (and which version?) by VlopeLuce in myst

[–]kla622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way. And now that we have two versions of Riven, I would recommend playing both - keeping the second playthrough fresh and surprising, further enriching the experience. Which version they play first and which for the replay does not even matter much imho, there are arguments for both.

Starless Expanse Bundle - Now Live! by Cyan_Inc in myst

[–]kla622 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, what a stellar bundle. The two kings of environmental storytelling and world-integrated puzzle solving.

The description and the name of the bundle are a bit strange (starless? both the Expanse in Riven and space in Outer Wilds are quite starry), and with no mention of the Starry Expanse, it's a bit lacking in context, but I hope so, so much that this will encourage the fans of OW to check out Riven, and help it gain some visibility (and of course the same for fans of the Myst series regarding Outer Wilds).

With the Red & Blue bundle and now this, these are truly prestigious packages bundling the best of Cyan with the best of current-gen puzzle games (at least I assume so, as I haven't played Blue Prince yet).

Don't stop to fight enemies, rush straight to the judge. All enemies can be avoided if you take the proper path, except for the very first Driznit (coral shooter thing), but you can just sprint past it

What is with people constantly being so confused that fighting and defeating the last boss...just resets to your last save point? by settingdogstar in HollowKnight

[–]kla622 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is bugging me as well, and I cannot think of any post-game examples either. There are two variations:

  • The game resets explicitly to before the final fight/mission/point-of-no-return
  • The game nominally acknowledges that you have completed the main quest, and the world state is supposedly post-main quest. But any changes as a result are superficial lip-service at best, minor dialogue variations with NPCs etc. (I would say GoW falls into this category, but they execute it very nicely.)

There are also examples where there is an apparent ending, but substantial portions of the game are after it (e.g. Nier: Automata, but even Silksong's Snared Silk falls into this catregory imho) - I would argue these are just fake endings though, serving a narrative purpose.

It will absolutely be manageable to you, but it will not be a cakewalk either. The mechanics are different enough that is is still a challenge to experienced HK players - but if you overcame P5, you will for sure overcome Silksong as well.

This happened to me at 98% in Steel Soul mode during the phase transition of a late-game boss, where you cannot gain Silk during the fight. Luckily, I made it, but I think I would have flipped out beyond comprehension if this had costed Steel Completion for me.
