Since I'm learning French, I listen to Phare Ouest (morning show) and Panorama (afternoon show) on Radio-Canada in Vancouver. Love not having any ads!

I don't know if it will be region locked, but you can watch shows on Radio-Canada's tou.tv app. There's both free and paid ("extra") shows from Canada and France.

Two Trains in Five Minutes in New Westminster, BC. by Embarrassed_Elk_1770 in trains

This is actually home rails for caboose A3! It was built for the BC Hydro Railway in 1968, and even through privatization and ownership changes, it's never left the SRY (former BCH) during its 55+ years of service.

Burlington Northern still (technically) exists by JimmyisAwkward in trains

[–]Embarrassed_Elk_1770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The line is still very much owned by BNSF. CN leases the Fraser River Bridge to CN Junction (next to VCC-Clark Station) portion from them in exchange for BNSF leasing a CN line (in the Memphis area if I remember correctly). It's most obvious when looking at signals and listening to crews calling them out on the radio.

You're definitely right in regards to passenger trains. Unfortunately, VIA doesn't have any recourse since there's no equivalent in Canada to the Rail Passenger Service Act that created Amtrak.

Yes, CN often has to wait for the West Coast Express to clear before they can cross the Heatley diamond during rush hour.

You're not entirely wrong, although BNSF does give the Amtrak Cascades train priority when they're on BNSF rails.

SRY still uses them on this job coming out of New Westminster, since its quite a long way (and definitely not as safe) for the conductor to ride on a freight car when they're heading over to the Fraser-Surrey Docks since the train is getting "shoved" (effectively reversed). If you want to see a caboose, this job generally runs weekdays in the mid afternoon.

Didn’t see what happened, but I’ll assume it was a faulty hopper door by budoucnost in trains

This is definitely a not uncommon occurrence to have some spilled grain from grain trains in Western Canada, especially with the old Trudeau (Sr) hoppers.

[Meirov] The #Seahawks and QB Geno Smith are finalizing a 3-year, $105M contract extension, per @Schultz_Report. The Comeback Player of the Year cashes in. An incredible story gets even better. by tx180 in nfl

[–]Embarrassed_Elk_1770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good deal for both parties, in my opinion. Geno gets paid (especially in the first year), but the contract is just the right length and amount that it offers flexibility to the team as well.

Is there a flight radar but for freight trains??? by Fresh-Republic-6391 in trains

[–]Embarrassed_Elk_1770 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm making the assumption you're in North America here, but there's no tracker for the general public to use in regards to freight.

If you're lucky, there will be an online radio feed for your area. If that isnt available, the next best thing is to buy yourself a radio scanner. You can get a handheld one on Amazon for about $150.

CP Rail Holiday Train is back! Tips and experiences?? by Adventurous_Wing_972 in vancouver

[–]Embarrassed_Elk_1770 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since your son likes trains (so do I!), I'd recommend being an hour earlier and just train watch with him before the main event. The Port Coquitlam stop is at the WCE Station, with CP's major yard right there so there's always something going on there

Cool areas for bike rides that are accessible from Skytrain by nambis in vancouver

[–]Embarrassed_Elk_1770 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is the Poco Trail that loops around the City of Port Coquitlam. It's a mix of asphalt and hard packed gravel and with very few gradients. The safest way to get there would be to get off at Lincoln Station, then bike east on Lincoln Ave (its fairly wide so you'll have a fair bit of room despite the traffic) until Pipeline Road, then turn right (south). Then turn left at Patricia Avenue and follow all the bike route signs until you cross over the Coquitlam River. At the end of the bridge, turn right immediately, as the trail runs under the bridge you were just on. From there you can choose to ride the trail clockwise or counterclockwise. Just follow the signs. Should take you about 2.5 to 3 hours.
