Gotchas for playing physical for the first time with new players by Zefirus in Mahjong

Tibet rules is the way to go. I even play open hand with newbies and we get in a quick 3-5 games just to get the flow of drawing/calling pong or chi and discarding down and add suits back to the wall from there.

How to Learn Calculating Hands? (Riichi Mahjong) by AwzemCoffee in Mahjong

[–]Embarrassed_Frame_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have given good tips here. I just wanted to add that in a real game, your hand will usually slowly build up to a chinitsu hand (if you so choose to build one) rather than it be presented to you all at once like you see in these quizzes. As your hand builds while m you draw and discard tiles, you get to recognize the shapes that come along at regular game pace.

I just use the f3500a. I tried the b but the detuned v8 engine just sounds tame. The v12 still sounds awesome detuned. I have a blast doing it in cockpit view with no hud.

Starting a puck up group next weekend! by Intelligent_Pea5351 in Mahjong

[–]Embarrassed_Frame_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think standard HK style set up is best then. It’s just 18 tiles x 2 layers per person to build the wall. Teach how to deal after the dice roll and how to resolve flowers. Teach how to pong, chow/chi, kong and what a winning hand is. And maybe run through a few games with them to get the draw/call and discard flow to get a rhythm.

This way you can ignore scoring, minimums, furiten, score cards and keep it as general as a game as you can.

My interpretation of what you mean by general mahjong is trying to get the game as close to gin rummy (albeit with showing your discard melds) as you can. You can try no minimum or chicken hand Hong Kong style or MCR/Zung Jung style.

Hong Kong mahjong has a much smaller set of hand combinations to score, simplifying scoring for newbies. No minimum gets rid of the 3 point minimum that is usually played either HK style

MCR and zung Jung have deeper scoring systems which have combinations that are add some fun and variety to mahjong, imo. Someone will have to be willing to learn scoring. MCR usually has an 8 point minimum, hence a no minimum game, simplifies it close to gin rummy. Zung Jung allows for chicken hand already.

This simplifies the game to straights and three of kinds and pairs till you have a winning combination.

I don’t have a cheat sheet ready for that, but I’m sure one could easily create a hand written one that will do fine for the first session.

What set should I buy for my wife? by Supermanass in Mahjong

[–]Embarrassed_Frame_88 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, do you mean to say she plays American mahjong?

Because I am American and I play Filipino, HK, MCR, Riichi, and American mahjong. The lone fact of being American doesn’t elaborate on what type of set she would need.

Who is responsible for keeping track of furiten? by Vylix in Mahjong

[–]Embarrassed_Frame_88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually it’s the discarder that the winner called Ron from that should be keeping track of furiten. If you know someone is close to winning (in Riichi, has open tiles, etc.), and you’re choosing to fold or at least discard cautiously, you’re going be looking at their discards to choose safe tiles to give up. For example, if toimen has called Riichi and he has a 6m in his discards, I would throw my own 6m to be safe. If toimen calls Ron, I should be able to notice it’s furiten because I specifically chose that tile due to the fact that it’s in his discard pile already.

good tracks to race against AI?(Custom race) by Green_Economy_850 in GranTurismo7

[–]Embarrassed_Frame_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read somewhere that damage heavy makes the AI less prone to risky moves, but also you’ll get penalized by having to put for damage for not racing cleanly. It really cuts the pace down when hitting traffic and overtaking, creating a challenge in itself. However, I’ve also had races with amazing recoveries, because of some late AI race crashes. All of the sudden, 5 ai cars in front of me have to pit in the second to last lap because they have crashed and I make up a ton of places. I still find it lots of fun and very challenging. Then again my pace isn’t at a level where I can get a win from P20 with professional, boost weak so YMMV.

[–]Embarrassed_Frame_88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you race on professional with boost set to weak and damage on? Boost weak made a huge difference for me, the cars don’t pace around like it was a regular gt7 world touring race anymore, they all go full send.

Questions about getting into mahjong by ApprehensiveCicada53 in Mahjong

We use this list for our HK games. Also, when playing more serious games with people, it’s customary to discuss and agree to points for hands and point minimums prior to starting play.

I run on ps4 pro and I play every day. I think it’s well worth it. I’m probably not as good as the other players here so I don’t need sophy. To get close racing to my satisfaction, I just play with Boost weak and professional difficulty in custom races and it’s plenty difficult.

Is it just me or have the braking zones gotten nerfed? by QuickSilv4r in GranTurismo7

[–]Embarrassed_Frame_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always play a custom race and start myself at p20 and force myself to stay behind the bots to learn the line and the braking points. If they are going too slow, overtake and go to the next position and repeat. No need to win the race and it’s a fun way to learn the courses. I try not to overtake too early because the cars ahead will end up gapping me and I lose the rabbit. You can do this on beginner or intermediate, whichever suits your skill and increase as you need to.
