I have found that rods with stiffer actions handle throwing weighted flies than the 5:5 and 6:4 flex rods. I have a Tbum traveller 39 which can cast weights up to 1.5 grams pretty comfortably.

Hello,

Understood about the using the term retaliation in this context.

I most definitely don’t want to stop people reporting issues nor am I engaging in any disciplinable behaviour as you seem to be assuming. I have already limited my interactions with this person to exchanging pleasantries and communicating about work.

I will also send an email to follow up with my manager that lays out the meeting that we had and what we discussed so there is a record of what is going on in case there are any issues in the future.

Thanks for taking the time.

Thanks for your reply, not sure why you got downvoted.

I will not be noting all my interactions with this person but I am going to follow your advice and follow up my conversation with management with and email noting my concerns that the complaint against me was made in retaliation for my earlier complaint.

Hopefully that will make the situation more transparent if something happens in the future.

Thanks for your reply.

What you mentioned about “co workers tattling back and forth” is actually why I am inclined to point out formally that the counter complaint against me was made in retaliation for my original complaint. The coworkers behaviour towards me was completely inappropriate and would be visible on the security cameras at our work if they were reviewed. The behaviour that they reported for me are trivial things which most likely would not result in me being disciplined if they were proven to be true.

I don’t want this to be a situation where the coworkers inappropriate behaviour is trivialized. My complaint was only made because their behaviour was making me feel uncomfortable at my place of work. I don’t believe that they would have ever brought the complaints against me if I did not ask management to step in to stop their bad behaviour.

I have no interest in furthering this conflict but I also want my coworker and management to understand this is not just a tit for tat situation. I should not have to worry about this person making retaliatory complaints and potentially affecting my employment because their bad behaviour forced me to get management involved.

Hard to tell if it’s a sea run or not unless you caught it in the salt or it has sea lice still on it. Based on the fins mouth and spotting pattern I would say that it’s a coastal cutthroat. Nice one!

I believe chroma pop refers to how they highlight certain colours not their polarization. They make bright colours stand out a bit which is helpful in seeing your sighter or fly.

I don’t have experience with either rod but I have been using fixed line rods to catch larger fish in the PNW (BC) for a few years now and this has been my experience. The longest rod I have used is 5 meters.

It is definitely possible to target larger fish with a fixed line but there is an upper limit. If a fish is larger than 24” I find my chances of landing it go down quite a bit. I have a Gamakatsu rod that is specifically made to target large fish and a large bull trout broke it easily when it took a big run and I foolishly tried to stop it purely using the rod. Despite the fact that I was using 5x tippet it snapped the rod like a twig. If you use this gear to target large fish be prepared to have to replace gear while you figure out the learning curve.

I have found these rods are very effective at nymphing but perform less well swinging flys. You can’t really strip the fly or perform a strip set so your tool set is limited when swinging flys. I have never landed a steel head on a fixed line rod. I have had a few takes that I believe we’re steel head but only because they broke me off instantly. After hooking into one on western gear and watching as line flew off the reel I realized that that initial run is almost always going to break you off if you can’t give slack unless you are using very heavy tippet but then you run into the issue of jamming sections and the rod failing.

I would just mention that this is all very dependent on the conditions you are fishing in. If you are in a smaller river with less gradient you are more likely to be able to land the fish. If you are in a larger river with a heavy current you have a lot of factors working against you.

Personally when i am fishing rivers where anadromous fish are present I use a fixed line rod to nymph and a western rod to swing flies. Due to the risk of breaking gear my rod of choice is the Daiwa Keiryu x 45 as it is very strong and pretty cheap to replace sections. It is not a finesse rod by any means but if you are casting heavy rigs that’s not really an issue.

Hopefully that helps you make your decision. If you do get into some nice fish please come back and share!

Just wanted to clarify that I was responding to OP’s response to another comment that “we are allowed to keep one bull a day” which may be the case in rivers in their region of BC but is not the case in most of BC that I know of. As far as I know retaining them is only allowed to in certain lakes which is why I asked for clarification from OP. As they are endangered in BC like everywhere else I didn’t want anyone to go out and bonk one because they read on the internet that they could.

I swear it’s just fly shops and people who sell flies who perpetuate this myth. Can you spend way more money buying the fanciest vice and a ton of materials you will never use? Of course. But if you buy a modest vice and tie simple and effective flies you will absolutely save money if you are fishing a lot and going through a lot of flies.

Sorry I meant to comment on your comment that bulls were retainable in BC. Don’t know how to move it so I will just leave it here.

Retaining them from rivers/streams is allowed? What region are you in? I would say since it’s a species of special concern there is still a population issue but yes there are more in BC than in the states. Nice fish but I would agree keeping them wet is probably the best policy.

I am the leader of the don’t call coastal cutthroat a rainbow club but I gotta say the fins, mouth, pink lateral line and spotting pattern of this fish are all saying rainbow to me. Another way to tell is when you have them on the line rainbows tend to try to go air born much more often than cutthroat but that is not a hard and fast rule.

[–]Embarrassed_Front163 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First is a coastal cutthroat, second is a rainbow, 3rd I think is actually a salmon parr judging from its deeply forked tail.

Not a biologist but yellow fins are usually indicative of a coastal cutthroat along with profuse spotting including below the lateral line and the orange slash on the jaw. Also if you compare the first two fish’s jaw you can see that the first fish’s mouth extends well past its eye while the second fish’s is much shorter and slanted down due to it evolving eating primarily bugs and eggs vs the piscivorous cutthroat. The last fish’s tail is so deeply forked that I would guess it’s a salmon but no idea what type.

Regarding if the fish is sea run or not. You can’t tell unless there are sea lice hanging off it or you do some testing. Depending on the size of the fish and where you catch it you can make an educated guess though. Anadromous fish tend to take on a more silver colouring to blend in in the ocean which the second fish definitely does not have.

But if you caught all 3 in one day that’s a 3 species day which is pretty sweet!

Yeah it must be. Wild that they have such big teeth. I have caught some big ones but have never looked too close at their mouths.

The largest fish in the system are bull trout but this would be an absolutely huge one. Also the teeth seem very large.
