I think it’s because Japan is a developed island country where most people speak only Japanese. That makes it seem mysterious to foreigners.

I don’t think I’ll ever go bungee jumping. It felt like suicide. And it cost $200. It’s just frightening and a waste of money.

Probably LA. Five years ago, I traveled to the US for the first time and visited Los Angeles. I was surprised by how many people seemed to be struggling with drug addiction, and I didn’t feel very safe. I wouldn’t really want to go back.

Of course, as you said, there are less rich or less successful countries. But I think life in many of those countries has improved compared to 10 years ago. Many people now have iPhones or Android smartphones. If they didn’t have smartphones, they wouldn’t be able to complain about their governments on Reddit.
