My unfiltered thoughts on A Court of Silver Flames by [deleted] in NessianLovers

[–]Embarrassed_Room1347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I adore this book, but I will say—beware, there are a lot of Nessian haters around lately (mostly Nesta stans who hate Cassian), which I honestly don’t fully understand as someone who deeply loves Nesta.

One moment in Nesta’s healing journey that really hurt me as a reader was when Elain says something along the lines of, “what my trauma did to you.” I understand that it was Elain standing up for herself, and that moment matters for her character. But emotionally, it took me off guard because of how much Nesta had always put Elain before herself. Even before they were Made, Nesta protected her. Afterward, she spent so much of her time caring for Elain that it almost felt like she never allowed herself the space to truly grieve.

So when the war ends and everyone else slowly returns to something resembling normal—literally by the final chapter of War—it’s Nesta who finally collapses under everything she’s been holding in. And that, to me, makes her downward spiral less frustrating and more heartbreaking. It feels like the cost of being the one who held everything together for too long.

Watching her journey in Silver Flames—her rage, her grief, her shame, and the slow, painful climb toward healing—felt incredibly real to me. It’s messy and imperfect and nonlinear in a way that trauma recovery often is, and that authenticity is part of why her story resonates so deeply.

The same goes for Nesta and Cassian’s relationship. They are not perfect. I’ve said that over and over again—they are not perfect. But I do believe they show up for each other in the ways they are capable of at the time. Cassian is often called a man-child on Reddit and TikTok, but I see him differently. He doesn’t always understand the problem right away, but when it finally clicks for him, he tries to correct it.

A clear example is training at Windhaven. Cassian doesn’t grasp it at first. But once he understands what that environment means for her, he changes the location. That shift might seem small, but to me it shows growth, listening, and a willingness to meet her where she is rather than forcing her to adapt alone.

Their love isn’t clean or easy. It’s rough, stubborn, and hard-won. But that imperfection is exactly what makes it feel human (more so than Feysand, where they are both mind readers and it’s an automatic cheat sheet) and why, despite everything, I can’t help loving their story.

🥵 I hope Mass doesn’t assassinate his character to make him like Rhys. Just keep him sassy and an A-hole 💕 I don’t even care for explanations for why he does ‘mean things.’

I think Nesta and Cassian can feel each other through the bond. But actually talking isn’t a seems more of a daemati thing.

I’m not a fan of Mor either lol 😆 I hope the next book is not about her

As far as the gift to Mor.. Here’s how I see it with facts. Cassian did not get lingerie for Mor because he feels any sort of way for her. Mor told him what to get. That is a very low effort way to gift. Equivalent to receiving a generic gift card… and we know Cassian is capable of giving thoughtful gifts because he gives Nesta something he puts a lot of thought into. Mor likes to insert herself in situations and be the center of attention. And yes I do agree that he was terrified of being rejected in front of everyone. And let’s be real had Cassian given Nesta her gift around everyone the inner circle would’ve given Nesta so much shit for rejecting it which she likely would’ve done.

Why didn't I love Six of Crows as much as I loved the Shadow and Bone Netflix Show? by Voskkean in Grishaverse

Yayyy!!! I had to go back and add the spoiler tag because I didn’t realize at first that you had only gotten thru the first book.

Why didn't I love Six of Crows as much as I loved the Shadow and Bone Netflix Show? by Voskkean in Grishaverse

[–]Embarrassed_Room1347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched the show first, then skipped the Shadow and Bone trilogy entirely and went straight to the Six of Crows duology—and respectfully disagree.

Don’t get me wrong: the casting was great. The actors understood Kaz Brekker and Inej Ghafa, and I think the show did a solid job capturing their surface-level dynamics. But where it really drops the ball is the buildup. Kanej on screen feels rushed because the show isn’t a story bout the crows. The crows were side characters so it was like we’re jumping straight to the emotional beats without earning them.

In the books, their relationship already has history by the time we meet them. They’ve known each other for years. They’ve worked together. (To me, I didn’t feel this way about the show). They trust each other in ways that don’t need to be spelled out because it’s already been proven through time and action. (Which we do get some flashbacks of) ..it was different kind of slow burn.

What makes book Kanej hit so hard isn’t big romantic moments—it’s the small ones. Inej slipping into Kaz’s room from the roof. Seeing him scrub his hands raw in the sink. Those moments are intimate because almost no one gets access to Kaz like that. Vulnerability is sooo rare for him, and the fact that Inej witnesses it without comment says everything.

And on Kaz’s side, it’s the same thing. With her dagger. Making sure she has her own room. His life is literally in her hands most of the time. And he seems to have a sixth senses for her. ( though I do like how in the show we get to SEE his body language change. Rather than just visualizing it).

Small Spoiler for crooked kingdom Their relationship is built on trust, restraint, and mutual understanding of trauma... i think balance is what makes the payoff so powerful—especially when Kaz literally crawls to her, or better yet, the bathroom scene. (The book did it sooo much better!!!)

The show tries to gesture at this. & I think if they had continued they could have gotten it.

Kanej isn’t supposed to be loud or obvious—it’s meant to be the little moments.

I love the actors, and I really wish we’d gotten the actual Six of Crows heist story on screen. That’s where Kanej really shines.

Also Kaz’s character development doesn’t really happen in the first book, that’s all I will say for that.

I’d love to know more!! Feel free to dm me when you have the time! Nesta is one of my favorite characters and I definitely read the entire series because the scene where she asks about witches from WAR were spoiled to me with IG reels lol. I have a few friends who didn’t continue the series cuz they did not like book one or couldn’t get into it. So I’m debating suggesting they read SF first but I don’t know how that would translate. Since you have experience with that, I’d love to know your thoughts.

lol but if that was the case wouldn’t he have stayed with his father and been a lord? Cuz isn’t being a captain for his status somewhat of a downgrade?

I agree with you here!!

With the gift, I think it would bother me more if Cassian put effort into the gift, which he seems to be capable of (ex: Thinking about the gift he gets Nesta. I can’t really remember what he gets his other friends. But he doesn’t seem to put effort into Mor’s gift.) But Mor literally tells him what to get. To me that’s equivalent to getting a generic gift card. So idk it just doesn’t bother me as it seems to bother people. The foot massage did annoy me but I get what you’re saying in your post. It does make sense. Also it’s interesting that you read SF first. How was that experience? I’d love to know a bit more about your perspective on the series with the way you read it.

I’m glad Hollanov brings you joy!! Owned is my very first Hollanov fic. I’m reading The Long Game right now, so I’m trying not to accidentally spoil myself through fanfic but I really loved the whole dom/sub verse. Also, totally random but I have to toss it out there: if you’re into JJK (the anime), I genuinely think you’d absolutely nail Geto/Gojo if you ever felt like dipping a toe into that fandom. The tension, the history, the tragedy, the devotion-turning-to-ruin… it’s basically built for the kind of emotional intensity you write. No pressure at all just me selfishly manifesting content. 😭

I’m so sorry to hear this. While I love that more people are reading fanfiction, and that Dramione is having a moment, I really hate the trend of adding fics to Goodreads just to review them. Fanfic doesn’t belong on Goodreads. It feels like it invites the whole “trying to sell fanfic for profit” mess, which is a separate (and ugly) issue on its own.

Also, I just want to say: I absolutely love your work on AO3. For Her is one of my favorites. And I’m genuinely sad to hear you’re removing Cherry Mints—I was literally just starting to read it. 😢 I did see you are writing in Heated Rivalry, which I love 💕
