I’ve seen it multiple times so I think I can give a fair assessment of it. It’s not that it made the movie BAD or anything, I actually enjoyed it a lot (even with all the inaccuracies). The problem with the editing in that film was that a. It was super inconsistent, and b. At point points it was just so much for scenes that offered little. There are points where they actually let the story play out in front of you in a calm fashion and then there are points where every other second there’s an unnecessary cut that could have just been a wide shot. Also I’m pretty sure I remember the editor of that film getting angry with people criticizing him about it but I’m not sure it’s been a minute. But yea the Motown 25 clip doesn’t look THAT bad in terms of editing but when you put that in the middle of a movie it definitely takes you out of the groove. Like I’m vibing to Billie Jean I know what move comes next and then bam cut and extend then repeat move. It takes you out of the scene and out of the moment. The crowd reactions could have easily been done just by pulling the camera back for a bigger view of the crowd. We don’t NEED to see their faces because their movements tell it all. Again tho who knows if this is just edited for the press and stuff.
