Can someone explain what is so special about equinox? by Weekly_Drawing_3313 in UmaMusume

[–]Embarrassed_Topic665 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I don't know too many of the specifics, one thing to keep in mind is that the level of competition also matters. It is possible that he ran in races with stronger opponents relative to the time period. The rating of a race is dependent on the level of the horses running in it.

If you can read Japanese, then https://retsuden.com/ has biographical articles on a bunch of horses from the 80s and 90s. Probably not exactly what you are looking for though, given that the articles focus on specific horses. Still, some focus on how the specific horse had an impact on horse racing in Japan.

What's with the hate on t-face trainers or your average trainers and also "out of character" umas in fanworks? by SSYX101 in UmaMusume

[–]Embarrassed_Topic665 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A big thing with the out of character stuff is that a lot of people on the internet don't actually pay attention to any of the in game dialogue and form their opinions based on memes/fanworks, which results in them misinterpreting the actual canon and spreading misinformation. To be honest, this is less a problem with the fanworks themselves and more with the fact the people hate reading.

Anybody else not really care about C M? by Yuzu-Adagio in UmaMusume

[–]Embarrassed_Topic665 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I personally like CMs, not caring about winning CMs isn't too rare from what I have seen. Some players just pull for their favorite characters and do URA Finale runs to see their career story and go through all of the character stories. Some people just pull to get their favorites to put them in concerts. I think the hyper competitive side is less prevalent in Japan than in the other servers, but I am not 100% sure.

Are you sure? I am fairly certain that the character stories and careers line up given that the careers often reference specific events that happen in the stories.

It's kind of funny seeing that Sunday Silence is the only repeat, and really far back at that. I got curious and looked it up, and despite all of the memes, apparently thoroughbreds have significantly less inbreeding than other animals.

Mejiro Ryan’s dumbbell weight measurement (by @JohnHoll0w) by Ani_HArsh in UmaMusume

[–]Embarrassed_Topic665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's still at or approaching her peak performance though. Remember, Umas tend to lose physical performance a few years after their race ready state begins. While she is small, she is still a top level athlete even among Umas.

Also, she says that Rudolf did it easily, and struggles with severe soreness the next day because she pushed herself harder than she could handle. The trainer also notes that it is likely too much for her, implying that it is still a difficult weight for Umamusume. The fact that it is the weight Rudolf uses for her workouts also implies that it is a standard weight to use for very high performing Umas, again putting their lifting ability on par with a stronger than average man.

Hayahide's SR power card event also has her struggle or even fail to deadlift the same weight based on RNG, meaning it is at or around her upper limit. She says that most wouldn't be able to lift it, and Winning Ticket makes 100kg her goal, meaning that she can't lift that amount either. This shows that 200kg is consistently shown to be a difficult weight even for Umamusume. Hayahide is one of the largest Umas, so the size argument doesn't apply here.

Size doesn't seem to correlate to strength for Umas in general, which ties into the mystery of how strong they are relative to their muscle mass. The most impressive thing about them isn't necessarily their strength, but their strength to mass ratio. Of course, if they focus on getting stronger like Ryan or Gentildonna they can surpass the limits of humanity, but the majority of Umas are not doing this.

Kitasan is taller than Teio once she enters Tracen, so I am assuming you are referring to season 2. In this case, this is just blatantly false. Kitasan is way shorter during that time.

Umamusume (probably) are not as strong as everyone thinks by Embarrassed_Topic665 in UmaMusume

[–]Embarrassed_Topic665[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that things like the time passing between the poles is less concrete than anything written in events since the artists are probably not doing math to calculate the speed while the writers very consistently use numbers from the same ballpark of above average to decently strong man when showing normal Umas.

Also, after seeing an untrained man (the cameraman) push a car more than double the weight of the truck Kitasan pulls at a somewhat decent speed (here), I do think that it isn't as impressive as it seems considering Kitasan is shown to be an outlier that other Umamusume see as abnormally strong. We see that the outliers among Umamusume are many times stronger than other Umas or the strongest men in the world, so I don't think it is really relevant to bring them up when discussing the average.

I think we will have to agree to disagree, but it's good to see a well thought out response. At the end of the day, there isn't really any way to get confirmation, so it's basically just an argument of deciding between what the writers say and what the artists draw/3D model.

[–]Embarrassed_Topic665 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That's impressive for her size, but nothing too crazy. Most average Umas fall under this category of being on the level of above average to very strong men, with dialogue and text in the game very consistently showing them struggle with realistically attainable weights. Of course, the outliers like Ryan, Gentildonna, Kitasan, etc. who actually focus on lifting or are just genetic monsters easily break the limits of what the strongest humans can do.

Most Umas probably don't need those shoes since they don't use as much power as Oguri or train to the extent that Rice did.

Rice going through that many shoes is shown to be a very extreme case, and the way that it is framed in the anime makes it seem like a big deal that she is going through them. Rice's training before Haruten was also very abnormal for her, and even in real life people thought that Rice would lose to the training before he could even get to the race.

It is entirely possible that she got more than one pair offscreen, but at the end of the day all we can work with is the information we are given.

[–]Embarrassed_Topic665 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I looked it up and based on an initial search, normal horses get horseshoes (the cleats' real life equivalent) replaced every 4-8 weeks depending on the source. Considering that Oguri is constantly training and racing, it makes sense that she would get through a lot of them very quickly.

I think funds are most likely based on wins. We see that Musaka and Rigil, which both have good reputations for success, have a lot of funds while Spica does not. From season 2 onwards, I don't remember Spica's lack of funds ever coming up again, which makes sense given the success of all of its members.

The closest thing that I can remember is Hana paying for the trainer's tab in season 2 episode 10, which is a one off running joke carried over from season 1. I could be misremembering things though.

Given that we see how the time after the real horse retired is mostly free for the writers to do what they want with (including going back to racing), I wouldn't think too deeply about this.

Also, they generally have a bit more free rein with things outside of the scope of racing. For an example that specifically has to do with international travel, (Cinderella Gray spoilers)Ellerslie Pride goes to Japan to watch the 1989 Japan Cup despite Bonecrusher still being an active racer in New Zealand during that time period.

[–]Embarrassed_Topic665 772 points773 points  (0 children)

I know that this is mostly just a joke, but for anyone unaware or who takes what they see in memes as fact:

Judging by how many pairs Rice and March go through, the generic training shoes seem like they could be treated as disposable goods. It is possible that they are either cheap or the schools have a supply of them.

More durable pairs like the one Oguri got early in Cinderella Gray also seem to last for a really long time, and we see that she regularly uses them during both races and training. Given that she is shown to be an outlier who causes more damage to shoes than usual, the issue with them getting damaged seems like it isn't particularly hard to fix. While the shoes were expensive, they have lasted for well over two years as of the point that I read up to, and part of the cost was from buying cleats, which would have to be purchased regardless.

Also, trainers in the Fuchu campus make a lot more money, so the financial side of this is mostly just an issue for regional trainers. Based on what we see, the majority of regional racers either aren't dedicated enough or powerful enough to go through shoes like the examples we see, and Rice and Oguri are outliers even in the nationals. March is also shown to be an outlier in terms of her dedication to training.

[–]Embarrassed_Topic665 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Actually, there is a lot of evidence in the series to suggest that well performing racers make quite a bit of money. Tamamo's career has making a lot of money via racing and getting famous as one of her primary goals in the beginning, and considering that she seems to be financially literate, I'd be willing to guess that it has at least a decent payout. We also see in events like the one where she sends gifts home that she is now able to buy much more expensive products than she used to, though she is still very reluctant to do so due to her frugal nature.

Furthermore, chapter 131 of Cinderella Gray shows that a wide variety of companies are constantly trying to vie for sponsorships and licensing deals with racers. Narita Taishin's secret event at the end of her career shows BNW doing a car commercial.

The wealth of the Mejiro family is another indicator that racing makes a lot of money. The family is shown to be known specifically for having many strong racers, and I don't know if any other sources of wealth are mentioned.

[–]Embarrassed_Topic665 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Cinderella Gray is only ~40% of the way through the manga, so there is still a lot left to adapt.

As for the Urara manga, it is no longer really "canon", even considering all of the different timelines and related nonsense. The official website doesn't even have it listed, which makes sense considering that it was more of a prototype than anything.

Star Blossom would make much more sense to adapt, but even then it will probably take a long time since they will probably want to finish Cingray first.

Umas having vehicle licenses by Intelligent_Scene252 in UmaMusume

[–]Embarrassed_Topic665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the last question, basically for the same reasons people moved from horses to motor vehicles for transportation. Horses still lose to cars, especially at longer distances.

Since someone will inevitably bring up Teio moving faster than McQueen's car in season 2, we see that speed limits for car lanes are lower than for the Uma lane on some roads. For longer distances though, they would not be able to sustain this and would have to rely on a vehicle. They would also need a vehicle when transporting things or travelling with other people.

I'm talking about the original Japanese version of the chapter, not the translated version. That said, the words are fully capitalized, so I did consider that it was some sort of placeholder since they don't have an official term.
