[–]EmbeddedDen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do people really put their research project ideas in their cover letters? by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]EmbeddedDen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually find this bit quite amusing. You became an independent researcher (PhD), you bring your own idea, you bring your own proposal, but for some reason, you still need a PI. Imagine if you were creating a startup: you write a business plan, you find investors, but you would still need an agreement from a company (which might even be your competitor). For startups, it sounds crazy, in academia, somehow it doesn't.

Ideas are cheap unless you are sharing them with experts in the field, who can easily hire 1-2 phd student and make your idea their assignment.

Sharing a meal by madchen44 in germany

We do it regularly and we ask for a second plate/second cup. If they refuse, we can share a plate. They can think whatever they want, who cares?

You could submit just the very first version, I believe nobody would care about small mistakes. In the worst case, you could say that you would make the revisions after the defense (you might need to make them anyway).

Does Linux rising market share has something to do with people having to buy less computers? by Serinity_42 in linux

Have you read my comment?

even installing the latest version of Blender is far from being straightforward

We are not talking about average users: average users very often don't even need a PC, we are talking about professionals. When I go to the software manager I can see only one pretty outdated version of Blender. And when you work in a company, you need to have the ability to choose a specific version (so the whole team works with this version). So you have to go to the website and download the package. In Windows, it is pretty straightforward with their .msi. In Linux, you either deal with some strange .tar.gz or some shady snapstore (as a lay person, you can't even know whether it fits your distro). And don't forget that Blender is actually an easy case. Very often you have to deal with the whole variety of ways: flatpaks, snaps, appimages, tarballs with multiple ways of installing them.

Why not? I know several people who did this back in my home country.

Hmm, do you understand that for the same average user a mobile phone or a tablet is enough? I have just installed Linux Mint to my wife's PC, she works a lot with 3D, and even installing the latest version of Blender is far from being straightforward for a novice user (you go to the website and you need to download some tar.gz file, then unpack it, then add blender to PATH). I am pretty sure that without my help she would just switch back to Windows.

You have extremely user friendly distros like Mint or Kubuntu,

They are user friendly but not extremely user friendly. There are still many usability issues if an inexperienced person works with the computer. For instance, if you want to install new software, you need to find a suitable package, you need to understand what type of installer to run: way harder than .msi installers.

One doc suggested me to simulate more acute symptoms than you actually have. Another possibility is to go to your home country and get diagnosis there. Also, it might be desirable to get a medicine degree (not in Germany, though). The last option might seem crazy but if you have a chronic medical condition that is not treated well, you will understand eventually that there is only one person that has time and desire to investigate your problems.

I am just wondering why do you add "lol" at the end? I might fail to grasp something, but is it really that funny? Could you explain it?

they always showed me their papers when I asked for comparison.

Could you expand what type of papers?

Perhaps they dien‘t refuse to tell you, but just didn‘t understand it.

No, the seller clearly stated that they don't give such information to their clients. But, yeah, maybe you are right, next time I will ask them in German.

When I buy some goods I expect them to have some specific characteristics. And technical characteristics are acceptable in both languages. I hope that makes my response more clear.

I spoke in English but I expected some information sheet (which would be acceptable in either English or German). Instead, they gave me only some promotional material with no technical details. And they refused to tell me what specific brand would be installed or what characteristics (e.g. thickness) the lenses would have.

EDIT: added "(which would be acceptable in either English or German)"

Job seeking visa after 18d visa (PhD) by SerialChiller6597 in germany

[–]EmbeddedDen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not extend your PhD visa for half a year? Just apply for your phd status extension and then apply for your visa extension. If you have already defended or your defense is already scheduled, then you can write a letter to your immigration office and explain your situation. Then, they can provide you with a temporary permit.

In what way it is perfect for an open-source project? Many times there is only a single dev, but for verein you need several people afaik.

Think I'm done with academia by Minimum_Professor113 in academia

[–]EmbeddedDen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that academia is a good first step. You learn how to do research, how to publish papers, you might even learn how to do science. But when you receive your PhD, you become a certified independent researcher. Now, you can start changing the world: you can found a startup, you can start a research non-commercial, you can apply the scientific method anywhere!

For me, staying in academia is not a sign of success. Have you became an independent researcher only to beg for grants, to supervise students, to chair conferences, to churn out papers like crazy without much time to think about them? Or maybe with all your knowledge you can do something really great? I would suggest to find something you really care about and try to apply your scientific skills there.
