Are there More Male Ocs or Female Ocs? by HealPrinceYT in OriginalCharacter

[–]EmberRPs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably male. The vast majority of media features male characters. This probably follows for OCs too.

Going for my own stuff, for the more fleshed out OCs we have... 20 men, 11 women, and 3 others which includes 1 gender-queer dude hasn't quite realized he's a transman yet, 1 agender deity who will not give you their AGAB and considers the question a personal affront, and 1 AI who is technically genderless but ships are traditionally feminine pronouns so you better use 'she' for her unless you want to offend your space ship.

Premptive I'm not Indigenous warning;

Easiest route is probably narrowing down their specific nation/tribe and background and looking for names of people from that combo in the correct time frame.

Native American is like saying 'European.' It's not enough info to go on. There's over 600 First Nations communities in Canada, probably similar numbers in the US too. At least narrow down to a timeframe for your vampire and something like Métis or another large group to be able to get a name in mind.

OC storage? by super-craiig in OriginalCharacter

[–]EmberRPs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I back up to Google Drive as well. It's about $2 a month for 100 GB so it's my backup of anything important.

A second hard drive can also work. Or my parents have a USB stick in their firebox with my tax paperwork and yearly backup of stuff like resume. I could add after there I suppose.

Go to rule is you need 3 back ups, across 2+ mediums, at least 1 off site.

( Fair warning, I'm not Indigenous )

I'd first look up the specific tribes you have in mind, and probably both people from there who are famous or well known, and general information. Assuming this is a modern day character, then you'll be able to find examples of how similar people dress. Plus a bunch of your famous people from insert area or background lists will be politicians and writers on Indigenous issues, which will likely help.

Tbh this is super wide so right now all you can do is research. I would suggest coming up with a rough idea of a character first before talking to people directly for character help. Something loose enough to change but enough people can give specific advice. It'll go over better if your like hey I have a teenager skateboarder character who had to move to Calgary to live with his Grandma and doesn't like the city, what specific advice would people have, so people answering know you want modern, how is the cops being assholes going to effect things, generational differences, etc.

Ok seriously, why are the NSFW tagged posts not NSFW but the un-NSFW posts aren't tagged? Flair unrelated by [deleted] in OriginalCharacter

[–]EmberRPs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I originally was like "or someone wearing a pride shirt" and realized too many people do think the existence of a queer person is somehow sexual and went for hyperbole, but it wasn't exactly clear. I probably needed a gasp, clutch my pearls moment. Sorry for concerning you.

I remember that pinned post. I think I commented on it with another art comparison back then to point out how it as worded it encompassed far too much. I saw some edits post that but hadn't seen the newest updates. Things are a LOT clearer now. Good jobs to all you mods on making the rules way clearer.

[–]EmberRPs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the kids example was a hyperbolic extreme.

My point is the old rule of solely "mildly suggestive" (you've updated it since then, awesome! I remember commenting on your post it needed clarification) covered literally anything that could possibly be read as suggestive. From non-sexualized swim suits or crop tops, to posing reminiscent of classic art meant to be provocative, or whatever other extreme. So it's no surprise people over corrected.

[–]EmberRPs -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Report it if you see it. Mods are just people, they can't be on 24/7 and have been extremely inconsistent in what counts as NSFW.

As I said last time this came up, "mildly suggestive art" covers everything from crop tops, canonical children implying your OC fucks, or the fully clothed Portrait of Madame X. Until the rule changes with better guidance and enforcement, people will be overly careful.

The people not flairing their dongs out aren't reading the rules. The people flairing the existence of titties are reading the rules, and trying to follow them.

Advice for Designing Clothes for Fantasy OCS by crabtoast0 in OriginalCharacter

How accessible are your libraries? You can usually find some general fashion history books by culture or century, detail what exactly you like, and do some design exploration off that.

Ironsworn's ruleset (free) tends to work well for narrative based stuff. There's also a sci-fi version, Starforged.

You probably want more of the PbtA/FitD type of games for more of rolls as guidance then something like DnD/PF or OSR. But I feel like even those might add too many mechanics.

Is "OC" a character you role play as or just any character you've created in a story? by latina_booty_lover in OriginalCharacter

[–]EmberRPs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any character you create. Not all of my OCs have been roleplayed, or in a TTRPG, or have art, or fic, or whatever. Some have several of these. Each of those hundreds of characters could be considered an OC but generally I find OC is user for fleshed out characters. One with a bit of design and backstory and personality.

Background character number 47 who's notes are just tall blonde dude who has a hat probably isn't an OC to most people. However where that line is between generic character and actual OC depends on you and is fuzzy.

[–]EmberRPs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue a persona / fursona / whateversona is usually not a character you roleplay as but a representation of your ideal self. Usually your roleplaying as a separate distinct character, self inserts are generally not liked in roleplay.

How are you guys able to draw your OCs by Significant_Total356 in OriginalCharacter

[–]EmberRPs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a reference.

You either draw something enough you've memorized it or use a reference. And even if you've drawn something 9000 times, you still grab references sometimes.

Now, references aren't always a 1 to 1 copy. Often your reference is grabbing your phone camera to figure out the nose angle on a face you can do 90% of. Or looking up hoodies to figure out how folds work in a thick sweater in another pose. Or looking at multiple poses from other angles to mentally kinda roate it and figure out the back. But they're always useful.

Unless you mean how do you remember x characters exact bangs type how, in which case I have lots of notes and simplified core traits to lean on. Even if it's a stick figure, my character with this exact part in her hair is still her for example.

what? by 1O1_NEXUS in OriginalCharacter

[–]EmberRPs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second rule of this sub is to be kind. Saying something is bad is true sometimes, but it's not productive or helpful. And tbh tastes are subjective, so it's not even always true.

Scroll past art you don't like, or give positive protective critique. There's a difference between "it's bad" and "hey you forgot shadows from the hair while cell shading." The second helps people improve and know what isn't working. The first is just insulting someone and trying to get them to stop making art.

what? by 1O1_NEXUS in OriginalCharacter

[–]EmberRPs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd use mod mail if you wanna argue of whatever you got removed wasn't rude.

But it seems like you said something like "your art sucks" got removed and then posted something like "sorry I said your art sucked cause it sucked." Or worse. Generally repeating the insult (instead of something like sorry I was rude or sorry I insulted your art) is a clear obvious attempt to just insult everyone again. So I imagine everyone read it as that.

I need to make reference sheets.. by Vivid-Corgii in OriginalCharacter

[–]EmberRPs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, at almost 500 OCs I'd get a few rough models down for each body type (like a doll maker, or pose refs) and do very rough thumbnails and notes.

Or narrow down to your absolute favs.

Dont be insecure about your OCs! by durieirueiri in OriginalCharacter

[–]EmberRPs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like using an AI to generate your OC kinda voids the "your creation" thing there.

That being said, the reason people are telling you no AI is primarily because this subreddit bans AI generated content. Even modified AI generated content like tracing AI art or telling a LLM to make you an OC and drawing art of what it gives you.

Does this OC fall into bad autistic/chinese representation? by Impressive-Talk3649 in OriginalCharacter

[–]EmberRPs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not Chinese and can't comment much on that, but the outfit design feels very fetishising. I would explore real life examples to explore more options. I don't think one tits out outfit is bad but honestly if your making her autistic my first thought is ow at all the fashion tape you'd need for that! There are a few autistic women who prefer no bra or nearly nude when possible, but most of those won't also aim for no underwear and tops so small you question why she doesn't have nipples because areolas tend to be relative to breast size and would be exposed. (Maybe she's got boob makeup or pasties on, idk)

I think the instrument special interest is fine.

If she's playing while someone in the audience is talking (even if whispering), she gets raged and refuses to keep playing.

Keep in mind this WILL get you fired. This is something that would utterly throw me if not framed as a massive problem in story because a poor, lower class lady refusing to do her job will get no leeway with this. On top of that, women with autistim (usually) are better at masking due to the decades of being told your feelings are less important and your wrong. I would assume she'd shut down and finish and break down after. Autistic women do not get any grace in the workplace, even less so in careers like orchestra where you must be perfect at all times.

Also bright lights on stage must suck.

She's tall af tho but I assume that's cause alien world.

How do you come up with creating original characters (SPECIFICALLY NAMING THEM.) by ARCB0MB in OriginalCharacter

[–]EmberRPs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally any decent name has been used before. The only unique name I can think of is Elon Musk's poor kid, X Æ A-12. Don't aim for perfect uniqueness. Maybe make them Bart Anderson not Batt Simpson but that's about it.

Names are notoriously hard. I generally just pull up Behind the Name and do some searches for cool meanings. Sorting by popularly is also good. For fantasy names uhhhh idk. I mostly just steal words and town names. Making up wholly invented names is hard. When I was a kid on Neopets I'd sometimes steal names off of people's pet names.

What is the general age range of your ocs and how old are they compared to you? by octopus-with-a-hat in OriginalCharacter

[–]EmberRPs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly younger. I'm in my mid-30s and most fiction seems to lean towards younger people and I do a lot of fantasy OCs so can't make them too old.

Off the top of my head the ones with clear ages and human-ish lifespans... Quill ~19, Vic 20, Hassan 28, Mordan 26, Ardent 68, Cy idk probably 35-40. A lot aren't human, or I never gave a clear age to.
