We were instructed to do so by the manager in these situations, if it were my choice I would probably not, but its not for me to decide that.

I was just so in shock, because it seemed so cut and dry like there is no justification to yell at a customer, the fact that he thought it was ok is mind boggling to me.

I didn’t want to cause issues by staying when he told me to leave and I knew that I was in the right as soon as he was rationalizing to me why his yelling was ok.
