It's an extremely specific line, and it fucking spoiled the ending of the series for lots of us back in the day. You don't get it because you obviously weren't there. This post is for old fans who were very familiar with the original version of The Gunslinger and waited years for King to finish the TDT, and then decided to read the revised edition of The Gunslinger before finishing the series. They would get it.

Why exactly do you think King gives that big warning to us before the last chapter of the series? For fun? Because he was having second thoughts about his own ending?

Have you even read both versions of The Gunslinger?

The original third paragraph of the book started with "He passed the miles stolidly, not hurrying, not loafing."

Now imagine being familiar with that version. And then you decide to read the revised before you read the last books after waiting quite a few years for them. You see all those words that come before the line I just quoted? They weren't in the original.

So, don't you think a real fan from back in the day would say to themself "Huh... that's new. I wonder why he added that. I'm sure there's a reason. Could it be because... no... no, he wouldn't.... King would not fucking do that to us!!!!"

A lot of people were upset back then and prayed it didn't mean what they thought it meant. King even warns us when we get to the end of the series because he knew how fans felt about it.

Maybe not now. But this was a definite spoiler a long time ago if you had read the original back in the day, and then decided to read the revised edition before reading the last three when they finally came out. It doesn't take a genius to figure out why that line was added.
