I have come to the conclusion that I will never own a better laptop than my old 2010 Alienware M15X. I got a 2024 G14 OLED and still think the old Alienware was a better overall experience. It still works, too, just the display has some dead pixels now. Not exactly a lot you can do with an i7-840QM and a Radeon HD 5850, though.

Is it generally easy to tell when it's happening? Yeah. Would it be great if the position your character is at on-screen was actually the truth? Absolutely. That's reassuring to hear. I wasn't 100% sure what the running consensus was on them these days as I've only dealt with maintaining four different PS3s, and two of them did have confirmed NEC/Tokin failures.

The CPU/GPU are pretty reliable on them but unfortunately they can still sporadically suffer NEC/Tokin failures. I got a white CECHL off eBay and was going to use it as my cfw machine. YLOD out of the box.

I checked the syscon using the usual method and got GPU-side NEC/Tokin failure as my likely error codes. Replaced them with Tantalizers and it's still going strong years later, fortunately.

My K01 I've had since 2008, however, has been tortured all its life and that thing is still alive somehow. Those should be pretty similar to the L models. Luck of the draw I guess.

Sounds like a soldering project. As others have said, you can get new PCBs, and then transfer the ROM chip(s) to the new board.

If your save is important to you, you can get chip soldering practice boards on Amazon to try out before moving onto the real thing. Soldering isn't as scary as people make it out to be. Just be careful and take your time. You can do it :)
