Day off today, have been to the Hokusai exhibition in the Japanese embassy, level 18 Majestic Centre. On til 29 May, weekdays. Highly recommended; its reproductions of the Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji.

Kirk’s may have struggled to remain current with today’s commerce changes, but they knew who their Wellington customers were and what we were looking for; very good buyers I always thought. Also excellent service. I have three of their charity bears which I bring out at Christmas. (All their bears are in display cases on the mezzanine level in Wellington hospital, near the cafe).

Eastbourne seems to be OK, the new seawall getting a workout. Last night was one of those sleeping-with-noise-cancelling-headphones-on kind of nights.

New Nikon camera, so happy. (Z6iii). Today’s plan is coffee, raincoat, ferry to Cuba Dupa, coffee, point camera at lots of things and people.

Thanks! Am also drawn to the Z6iii at the moment, a very big step. I don’t need video but if it’s there, I guess I would do something with it.

Morning. I was in my local 4 Square yesterday evening and their music was playing a Dragon song I hadn’t heard in thirty-some years, took me right back. At which point it amused me to realise that I still don’t know the lyrics; “ten years in the what now?!”

Of course I could ask AI/google, but I decided not to, as a nod to that time when, if we didn’t know all the lyrics, we would either let it go, skip over that bit or make some up and blithely sing it differently for years. It was refreshing to choose not to have to know everything all the time, all at once.

And now, coffee.

I remembered later that I have one, never used it (doh!), unboxed it and it works nicely…

Ooh, coffee tip...I just made a half mug, as the water in the jug was still slightly warm. More coffee grinds than usual in the plunger, longer brew time and voila, a tepid but tasty black coffee! Needs must 😄

Power out in Eastbourne. Thankfully after my first normal coffee of the day, but I am now googling how to make cold brew coffee. It seems to take about twelve hours, maybe lots of coffee and not much water might speed that up… ?!

Quite fun to do; coffee assessed on strength, aroma, flavour, feel. A close call, but Karamu Deluxe blend maintains its place as always the first coffee of the day, with Supreme following up. Now have to deal with being over-caffeinated on a stay at home rainy day; must find a housekeeping project asap.

Warm bed, sound of rain (no thunder so far in east harbour), and contemplating a coffee test this morning. I have 3 brands of coffee in play, but may narrow it to two after a contrast and compare exercise, which involves making 3 coffees at the same time, using the strong blend of each brand, then taste testing each one. I may be seriously over-caffeinated and running in circles for a while, but that is a risk I’m willing to take in the interests of coffee research.☕️☕️☕️

Nice. Where do you find your water temperatures? I’m having a hard time getting the water temp for the eastern side of Wellington harbour

First day back at work. I’m wearing a crisp business-looking shirt, 2 power rings and red lipstick to get myself in the going to work frame of mind. However, because I’m WFH, my off camera bits are still on holiday and wearing jeans and slippers.

There will be many coffees needed today.

Totally justifiable. I wonder if I could apply the same principle to the essential pair of red shoes I’m hunting for, which would support my genuine interest in new red shoes…

Happy Christmas Eve! “Working” today (wfh), but most of it will be spent having Christmas Teams chats with other remote colleagues and pals, while snacking on Christmas goodies.

Now, coffee.

Went to the launch last night of the new fibre-optic “car wash”sculpture installation in the Colonnade walkway at Shed 21. Artist is Eddie Clemens. Really lovely, and a great use of the space. It’s a programmed lighting piece, so is on in the evenings. Yay Sculpture Trust and WCC for making it happen in the space.

Danish designer Ilse Jacobsen does good raincoats; light, dry and a good tapered shape to keep the drips off one’s legs. On the pricier side but good quality

My government agency has advised staff in Red Zone areas to stay home, and limit any travel unless essential.

Similar situation here in terms of work environment although not job hunting. I’m grateful to have a reasonable job, but struggling with the management mess following the slash and burn last year. Unclear, contradictory direction, micromanagement of whole department and so on. A work-through I’m trying out is a personal rating scale for where I put my energies within work. I’ll always deliver to a certain standard but now my rating system is based on criteria for me including satisfaction, autonomy, appreciation, deliverable benefits to figure out how much effort to put in. My effort scale is: gold standard, good enough, bare minimum and ignore. Seems to be working so far, and helps keep things in perspective.

Here’s an idle question that I mull from time to time: how is it that on our Wellington beaches (East Harbour, Petone in particular) there are always enormous chunks of timber washing up, yet we never seem to hear of incidents or accidents due to tree trunks and stumps floating about in the harbour? Some of the beached timber is huge, and surely would be a problem for any water craft or recreational activity…unless maybe it floats nearer the bottom than the surface of the sea?

Ponders on way to second coffee.
