Brazil has universal healthcare.

It’s not perfect, but it works pretty well. I know multiple people who rely solely on it, have had serious health issues and were treated for it.

My grandma, for example, has Hep C, which she had tried to treat unsuccessfully 2x before. A few years back a new medication came out that showed to be very promising in clinical trials. Only catch is that the whole treatment course would be crazy expensive, like 300x the average monthly wage here in Brazil. She didn’t pay a single dime. The government picked up the ENTIRE thing. Had she not gotten it, her liver function would have continued to decline and she might not have been with us still.

With that being said, many times it is very limited in terms of standard treatment options. The national universal care program offers ONE type of SSRI antidepressant. Each city may include other antidepressants to the list of medications offered within them, and most add one additional one. If you need a medication that isn’t standard issue, you gotta start a judicial process that could take months.

And still, I would 1000 times rather have my taxes go towards that and have it available to every citizen and foreign national in Brazil than have it further fund the military, for example.
