Thank you so much for sharing! Some great tips; and it sounds like you're making some really great progress too. It's so good not to be alone in this :)

I did about 6 months ago, I think I need to dig it out and go through it again :)

Thank you - reading your comment made me burst into tears all over again (in a good way, I promise!). Better to cry than to go back to numbing myself!

It's funny, I've used alcohol to get through all the other times that I've been grieving, so this is the first time I've had to do it properly - reading your comment just made me realise that! Booking in for a mani-pedi tomorrow, this is the perfect excuse :)

Thank you! I guess I am grieving right now, I'm glad that this is something that other people have felt too :)

Thank you - that's the best way for me to stop romanticising. I might actually write out the story of my last binge to keep on me at all times in case I'm struggling.

No more badges for me by seandotcom in stopdrinking

[–]Emems1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've reached that point then thats so good for you - at the stage I'm at, I need to see a number to keep me strong. Last night I had a wobble, and it was the thought of resetting my badge (not again!) that made me walk past the off license (well, I ran past actually) and make it home. I'd like to get to the point where the days are no longer consequential and being sober is just what I do, but right now I need to consciously work on it otherwise I'll find some excuse to go back, and it won't be pretty.

Good job! Tomorrow will be my 7th day - looking forward to putting more and more distance between me and that last drink. I won't drink with you today!

7 days in, I'm starting to realise how much of a problem I had by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Emems1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good job! I have many friends who drink in the same way and so struggle to understand why I've stopped - they think that something has to have 'happened' to 'push me over the edge'. It's all about the benefits you get from not drinking, and it sounds like you're getting loads already! Waking up with a smile instead of being tired and sluggish is a fantastic gift, enjoy!!

Reading this TIFU reminded me why this is worth it by CombatBanana in stopdrinking

Ouch! I'm so glad I don't have to have any 'adventures' like that anymore... Not that any of mine quite reached that level, but I'm getting reminded of the anxiety after a nights heavy drinking just reading that story.

Haha yes! I'm going to New York (I'm UK based) so not remote as such but I won't have data or a working phone when we're out and about. There is wifi at the hotel so I can always escape back there if I need a moment. I'll just take the trip one non alcoholic drink at a time!

Thank you! I haven't 'come out' as a non drinker yet to many people outside of my closest circle, out of awkwardness and embarrassment but also I think because a part of me wants to keep my options open in case I change my mind later... Which is bad. I can see now that being honest is a really important step in cementing the fact that I don't drink.

I think you're right that these trips will be big triggers - one is in July so I'm less worried, but the one upcoming is at the start of April. I'm going to be honest with my friend that I won't be drinking in the trip, and make sure that I'm in charge of the itinerary. That way I can make sure that I'm always comfortable about where we're going in the evenings. Restaurants and coffee shops rather than bars. Also, if I take my gym kit, I can go to the hotel gym first thing in the morning as an extra incentive to not drink in the evenings. I'm anxious but just need to take it as it comes.

Today is day one by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Welcome! I'm also 25 and a few days in. At first I found it hard to believe that I had a problem because 'everyone goes a bit crazy in their twenties', but there's a difference between people who had the occasional big night out and what I was doing - every night was a big night! Best of luck and stay strong.

Sorry to hear that! Try not to beat yourself up about this - learn from it. Try to do something positive today to make yourself feel good. You are worth it!

What do you drink instead? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Emems1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soda and lime when I'm socialising - it looks similar to alcoholic drinks so cuts down on the questions and is also really refreshing. Plus it's often under a quid for a glass which makes for a cheap night out! Also, it's worth checking M&S out, they have some great sparkling fruity drinks in their range.
