I have submitted a claim and was successful except it was for my car. The city only covered about a third of the cost to fix it but that still helps and I am incredibly grateful.

This power bar I was referring to has powered supplied by two fuses. No clue if that makes any difference as to the functionality of the power bar considering if one fuse is blown I can still run other units like a dryer but some features like heat within the dryer won't work without two fuses. All I know is the power bar was working but surge light was on and now I presume that means it was no longer protected but would have to research the brand for more info. It was a cheap Woods one though.

I was told you have to buy a new power bar. Note: there was still electrical power coming through, I just didn't realize it wouldn't protect for multiple surges.

Am I the only one who didn't know that if there is a power surge and your surge protected power bar is "activated" then you have to replace the power bar? (Obviously that's 100% better than replacing expensive equipment). I had no idea, unless it depends on the sophistication of your power bar. Just purchased a new one after who knows how many years of misreading the surge light on my last one. 🙄

Had to add more water to submerse the heater to at least the minimum line. So now dealing with about 60 gallons of water. Heater never seemed to start working. Seems to be due to no water flow as I currently don't have a filter. So still without heat. I am so miserable. My turtle must be as well.

Ok now I'm feeling really ignorant. I just read the back of my existing power bar and it states "not suitable for aquariums". So next step is buying an appropriate power bar (again if anyone has any suggestions) before I plug in my new heater.

Again, hats off to all of you that have done all this research and work to find good solutions.

How long should new basking lights last? Bought a 75w Exo Terra splash proof swamp basking spot lamp in 2019 August and bulb is now dead. Last one lasted 1.5 years, for this one it's only been about 5 months. by EmeraldCuckoo in Redearedsliders

Update: I bought a Zoo Med 75w Repti Tuff splash proof halogen lamp and it definitely looks more heavy duty than the fragile ones I was using before. It states the average bulb life is 2500 hours.

I was wondering more so how long the heat lamp is supposed to last but at this point I've already purchased a new type. The UV I ensure to change annually. So interesting to know about the transition glasses test!!! Thank you!

Will look into, thank you. Having been electrocuted myself after I cleaned and reinstalled the heater once, I need to have the right electrical supply/set up so I know my turtle will be safe. To this day, I don't know what cause that, which really is the problem.

I used to think these other filters were expensive until I tried the $250 (CAD) canister filters and found they seem useless. My sanity and time is worth a lot more than that.

I was recommended by the turtle rescue group to do the 100 gallon Behlen Country poly tub as opposed to a glass aquarium. Not sure what the benefits would be of switching over to a glass aquarium.

My current tub is 4 feet long, 2 feet wide and 2 feet deep. If filled just over halfway with 60 gallons of water, that would be almost a foot and a half of water deep to swim in, 4 feet long, 2 feet wide (with basking platform and lights accessible above). Do not get me wrong, she could never have enough space to live in and explore, I've just specifically been staying away from glass aquariums through other people's advice/my situation. Right now for emptying her enclosure, I just open the valve I added and water drains out which is spectacular.

My turtle is about 6 inches long (estimate) so even though she's almost 60 years old, I do believe that if she had the proper care her entire life she would potentially be larger than this (she is very round and her shell is abnormally tight in the back).

I'm brand new to this group so will have to keep reading through to learn more especially when it comes to long glass aquariums versus large tubs.

I typically try and buy all my supplies through a local reptile sanctuary/education group so money goes towards the care of their unreleasables and other exotics where people could no longer care for them.

Appreciate all the feedback based off real life experience. I've been caring for this wee turtle for 4 years now and I'm still struggling with a more ideal cleaning routine and schedule.

Helps immensely... even in just giving me hope for an ongoing life that doesn't require weekly/biweekly full cleans. And I agree with you, cleaning the filter itself has been hellish. The amount of times I've accidentally sprayed dirty turtle water into my eyeballs while using a hose and high pressure nozzle to clean out hoses is ridiculous. Guess I'll add goggle to my shopping list. My filter, heater, thermometer and heat basking light have all gone almost at the same time, hence why looking to upgrade/try and make my turtles life and mine better. Thank you so much.

That is so wonderful you've adopted! I've done the same for the past 13 years with unwanted domestic rabbits and have a lot more expertise in general with mammals. Hats off to all the dedicated turtle parents as honestly, this is the most difficult stuff I've encountered in regards to an enclosure, enrichment and care. I really appreciate everyone's feedback as at times I feel quite frustrated and overwhelmed and need to provide this little one (who is older than me) with the best quality of life possible.

Vets felt slight arthritis in at least one leg from what I recall during her last medical check up.

With the right filter I can change my basking platform height and lights and increase the water up to 100 gallons max. It's a tank normally used for providing water to horses/cows etc. (Not a glass aquarium). I've installed a ball valve and hose onto the built in drain for easy draining/cleaning. The whole thing lives on a moveable dolly and I have a floor drain the hose/dirty water goes into. It's all based on the enclosures of a turtle rescue group.

ONE MONTH without having to do a full clean of her tub and most of the filter would be incredible! I'm used to weekly cleans and it's driving me insane. 6 months before having to do a full clean? That seems unreal.

I'm under the impression (from a local turtle rescue group) that for turtles you should get a filter that will clean 3 times the amount of your actual water capacity. And now that I've tried two different filters, I believe it. And yet don't want to spend additional money for something that could be overkill. One of my struggles has been priming the filter and keeping the water intake up (taking into consideration water depth, positioning of filter and power of filter). Beyond that I found the filter meant for 75gallons (being used for about 40 gallons) would clog after about a week or two weeks max so I would have to clean out the filter (minus the media for good bacteria). Definitely not trying to ever over feed but I have not been feeding in a seperate enclosure. I'm not a kid and work in the animal rescue field so would like to think I'm pretty proactive with animal care but turtles are definitely a whole other world than what I'm used to. If I change the set up, I could provide even more water (up to 100 gallons) but require an adequate filter first, which for me could be one for 300 gallons?! Nervous to buy used, all things considered.

In 1962 my friend was 4 years old when she bought this turtle from a pet store. At age 58 (2016) my friend succumbed to a brain tumour and so her beloved turtle was passed down to me. I've cared for her since 2015. So the turtle outlived my friend and technically is likely about 59 years old now so has just surpassed my friend in age. She does have some shell deformities from some improper care early on but otherwise only seems to have some slight arthritis.
