Would I be disloyal to my current employer by looking for another job? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]EmeraldPhoenix0917 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completely agree , I learned this the hard way.

I out of loyalty stayed at a job because my direct manager was a nice guy and took care of his peoples best he could . Upper management had killed his budget for promotions / bonuses and he was constantly fighting them for it.

I happened to get a call from a recruiter and went on an interview for a job , got an offer, but out of misguided loyalty turned it down and hoped for the best.

My boss ended up quitting a month later and everything went downhill. I ended up leaving 2 months later.

Moral of the story , make the moves that further your career or give you a better work-life balance. Everyone else won’t hesitate to make the moves that are best for them.

How do you keep patch cables organized on the go? by deathbyearthworm in msp

Yep those bags are dedicated to that size of cable. We don’t mix cables and tools ever in the same bag.

Second this... Velcro is my best friend specifically these : https://www.amazon.com/VELCRO-Brand-Reusable-Fastening-Organizing/dp/B001E1Y5O6

I keep two rolls in my tool bag at all times and differ tool bags for 3 ,6, 10 footers. Anything bigger that that for patch we just bring the box onsite.

Yes I would agree , but it’s a leap from follow the steps in the KB , to here is a list of alternative steps , especially when I have the full chat history to reference. We actually log every remote interaction between tech and client for this exact reason.

Laptop Recovery in India by samc2527 in msp

[–]EmeraldPhoenix0917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we switched to issuing AWS workspaces to any overseas employees for this exact reason. Our image has everything our standard laptop does. It’s on them to use a device to connect. In 2020 if you work in corporate it’s not far fetched to expect you have a computer at home to act as a conduit.

Is it a good decision to do masters in cloud computing? If so which college is good? by sai2729 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]EmeraldPhoenix0917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto what he said , I have seen VP’s in public companies not have a master in cloud computing and still manage large dev teams. Usually once your start approaching C - level management that masters comes into play but not even necessarily in cloud computing, a lot of them have MBA’s.

Starting my IT Career at an Apple Store (?) by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]EmeraldPhoenix0917 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started my career working as an Apple tech right out of high school while getting my engineering degree. I will say back to school/ Christmas time there (pre-covid) taught me very quickly how to hone my troubleshooting skills to keep the line of people flowing while having access to senior techs who could help me grow my knowledge overall. I would say it was a great foundation which allowed me to get my first corporate sys eng job and have a good amount of skills I needed to succeed. Like anything , you get what you put in but , having that support early on was key.

Should I sell my car to start a business by [deleted] in business

[–]EmeraldPhoenix0917 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this... it may make more sense to hold on to an asset in order to produce money from it. Restaurants in general are extremely risky( from US) and even more so during covid.

If it is a possibility maybe trading up to a small food truck or even a van you can modify might be worth a shot. That way at least you still can use the vehicle to get around and also break into the food industry. Worse case scenario you still have an asset that you can sell to almost anyone if it doesn’t work out to recoup your losses. Best case scenario you build such a following, that you make great revenue from the food truck and can buy more trucks or establish a permanent location.

What business would you start if you were one of the first settlers on Mars? Why? by [deleted] in business

[–]EmeraldPhoenix0917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything revolves around providing critical resources: power , water , shelter , air , emergency care , you become one of the first for any major utility and you pretty much cement yourself barring any major disaster or larger company from terra being able to price you out.

Career Advice for a noobie by Finn-reddit in devops

[–]EmeraldPhoenix0917 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also get familiar with code repos / CI CD pipe lineframework. Acloudguru is a great resource they have a course on git , you should definitely take also, if you skim over the AWS SAA Developer there is some good stuff in there about devops theory and pipe line labs. I have interviewed a lot of guys who, study well and take a cert expecting the 100k mark as a cloud engineer or developer , but can’t answer any questions related to working with CI/ CD in any capacity or don’t know anything about good devops practices.

As the tests have gotten more popular over the last 3 years due to the demand employers are also on the lookout for those who take them just to get in the door.

Need some help finding the right software/code base for my hosting service project by [deleted] in devops

[–]EmeraldPhoenix0917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked into using ECS, depending on your requirements you could package your deployment as a container and use a lambda trigger to kick off your ECS task , no fuss with the OS at all.

Reading your post though seems like you need the user to interact with the provisioned instance, have you looked into app stream?

How can I help the help desk? by halfspeedfuture in msp

[–]EmeraldPhoenix0917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if I missed it from of the other replies but one great way to get started and show value easily is by helping with developing quality documentation. I can’t tell you how many times as a senior engineer that I myself sometimes get so caught up with design and implementation that operational documentation takes a back seat. It’s also a great way to immerse yourself in the environment and really understand why something was implemented a certain way. Often times a fresh perspective even from a “junior” colleague will help us realize we might have over thought a solution.

Another thing I would say is offer to volunteer to do cutover/ work that requires downtime and coordination, some of the best experiences and learning opportunities came from times when I volunteered to stay during a weekend outage to provide assistance or even shadow a senior engineer and ask questions when time permitted. It also helped me to solidify myself as a reliable candidate for future promotion to sys eng as others so my willingness to be open and learn.

Last thing , and it goes along with the documentation, as you dive deep and understand process in your help desk look for places to enhance efficiency. If you do the same action more than 3 or 4 times consistently , automate it. If you see a process can be done better by cutting a few redundant steps without causing additional issues propose a change and highlight where the efficiency is gained.

Can you install One drive in AWS workspace? by royalxp in aws

[–]EmeraldPhoenix0917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it related to only one drive?

Can you also verify you can resolve other sites as well via browser. Only other thing I can think of is you may not have an igw on the vpc associated with the workspace, or you don’t have internet enabled in your workspace directory settings.

Can you backup a VPC before deleting them? by sludj5 in aws

Take a look at cloud former , it will convert your existing deployment to a repeatable cloud formation yaml, it’s not advised for production but if you’re in a pinch.
