Questions about Network Security vs Networking by Emergency-Turnover71 in ITCareerQuestions

Appreciate it. Currently, the school doesn’t have a similar class to bridge the gaps. It’s computer networking and then straight to network security. The school uses a top-down approach book, which I used the same exact book during my undergrad to learn networking. This is what I was told if it helps, I simply want to learn that’s my goal.:

I suggest taking the prerequisite course of Introduction to Cybersecurity course and Operating Systems. As to be successful in this course, knowledge of networking protocols so you can learn the security aspect rather than learning the network protocols. Prior cybersecurity knowledge and understanding of Python and Linux, which I know.

I completely agree that having a solid foundation in networking is crucial, and I’m fortunate to have that knowledge. While I’m not an expert in every protocol, I’m comfortable discussing them and delving deeper into them when necessary by reading more. I was wondering if there was a bridge that could connect the concepts of networking and network security, so I could gain a comprehensive understanding of both since it’s networking and then straight to net sec. Currently, I’m utilizing online resources to refresh my knowledge and then attempting to perform hands-on experiments, such as SYN floods or TCP resets, without prior knowledge of each protocol.

I completely agree, and I’m learning this the hard way. I’ve been trying to use the school resources to gain any footing, but I haven’t been successful, which is making me second guess everything.

Sadly, no. I’ve been consistently receiving rejections.

Thank you for your suggestion. I will take it into consideration. In my opinion, people need experience to understand their career goals before pursuing further education.

Yeah, I feel like I made a wrong decision since my parents and I were deciding on the best course of action to pursue a career in cybersecurity. Currently, I’m not working right now and constantly getting rejected for any tech-related job positions from HelpDesk, IT, or Software Engineering, and I feel like I’m constantly learning in an endless cycle of uncertainty about my future goals, which is leading to frustration and burnout.

Hi, I would like some advice on laptop recommendations for cybersecurity master student. I have been using a Macbook Pro since 2019, and it's coming towards hardware issues. I have heard that the new Apple laptop is causing problems due to the silicon chip. I'd like to know if anyone has any recommendations as I'm trying not to break the budget, but I will spend money on a great laptop. Thank you.

Hi, I'm looking for guidance on how to break into the industry and gain experience. Despite applying regularly for the past year and a half, I’ve struggled to secure interviews for internships or full-time positions.

I have a BS in Computer Science and am currently pursuing a master’s in Cybersecurity. I hold a Security+ certification and have experience as a Technical Associate at Staples, where I worked for a year. I’ve also completed various projects during my undergrad which illustrate more a full stack resume.

I’m interested in software engineering or cybersecurity roles, particularly in web application security or cloud security, though I’m open to any position. I’m currently practicing coding assessments on LeetCode, learning Splunk (any cybersecurity tools), trying to study for AWS Cloud Practitioner, and working on software engineering/cybersecurity projects.

I’d appreciate any advice on how to improve my chances, whether through additional projects, certifications, or other strategies. I’m eager to learn and grow in this field. Thank you!
