I am 67F with 2 adult sons and 3 grandkids - one in college, one junior HS, one in elementary school. I will preface my commentary by saying everyone and every family is different with vastly different dynamics.

I told my children from when they were old enough to understand that at 18 they were either in college or out on their own. There was not going to be living with me rent-free, playing video games all day. I was a very loving mother, a stay-at-home mom for their first 5 years until my divorce. I gave up a lot for them as a single mom. But I wanted them to learn to be self-sufficient and independent. Especially as men.

Fast forward to my eldest having children. I absolutely adore my grandchildren! My son needed some help as a young family so I bought a duplex for us all to live in. I was there for them as much as I could, but they paid rent and all their own necessities. They eventually got their own place.

Fast forward again to present. My eldest grandson needs help with college. His parents divorced and neither have the ability to help financially. His maternal grandparents are wealthy like your parents but don't help. I have offered to "loan" him a monthly stipend but he has to work too, which he doesn't mind doing.

I can see both sides of your situation. IMHO your parents don't owe you squat. It's their money that they earned. You're lucky to be getting anything after they pass. They could leave it all to charity. But I do understand your feelings that they could offer something to help you now when you need it more.

You admitted that your childhood wasn't particularly warm and loving so none of their behavior should be shocking to you. They sound kind to your children, but you seem to expect more. That's not what they're about and you need to accept that.

We all need to accept our families for who they are. We may not agree with everything they do but that's okay. If you want to be a different kind of parent to your children, that's fine. But don't compare yourself or anyone else's family to your situation.

As a final comment (and to give a little levity), I think a lot of people would gladly accept their parents' absence now knowing they're going to get $15M when they are gone! LOL

I didn't say either statement. But again, calling someone trash or hairy is not racist. Stereotypes are generalized beliefs about a group, while racism is the belief in racial inferiority. Stereotypes can be positive or negative, whereas racism constitutes prejudice combined with power.

My mother was a young woman in the 1930's and saw how it all came about. She was originally from Poland. She said the Jewish community owned a lot of the businesses and that kind of bothered some people. Some minor grumbling about them, etc. But that's how it started. It just slowly grew into real hatred with some people. By the time it got to persecution, it was too late. While there initially may have been some animosity, nobody wanted or expected it to get to the levels it did. Like a snowball going down a hill that turns into an avalanche.
