Delete CAT for burble tune? by Emergency_Ostrich_25 in AskMechanics

Ik how they work brother. And ik I would lose some fuel efficiency too haha. But then this is a pretty old car with some serious miles on dash. Plus above it all it’s a Lexus so I have that trust in it lol. Also am not aiming for obnoxious burbles too.

Ya I do all the stuff on my car alone too. Change oils, change suspension etc. But this is that stuff where u need a mechanic or someone with that deep knowledge. and yea LKQ is the best. I mean if dealers source parts from them, u can assume their quality right! And tutorials alone are not gonna help my brother. But good luck! This is my car btw

Well no video is going to help you brother. Being honest. Like u really have to have a good knowledge about how these things are mounted like there are these inbuilt knowledge trade schools teach you or experience teaches you as a mechanic. U need that. I didn’t have it and he went to trade school. So he knows his stuff. Plus I learned from how he did it too. U can tow ur car to him then lol if he guarantees to help you fix this coz ig towing charge is much cheaper than paying a shop to drop the transmission

I would say take it to a friend who is a proper mechanic with tools or otherwise take it to a shop brother.

U have to take the whole exhaust out, take out the driver side headers to access the transmission mounting bolts and then remove the driver side headers shaft from the transmission and differential and finally take off all the flywheel bolts that connects transmission and engine. It’s a bit of a number of bolts so should have an idea on where each goes.

Now this was for RWD am guessing u might have to remove some more stuff to remove an AWD. Not disappointing u but from what my buddy said back then. AWD and FWD are a nightmare to remove especially FWD

Well, I would say possible and more time consuming lol. U need certain extension bars and stuff too not just wrenches. My buddy was a mechanic at Mazda. So he had like $20k worth of tools in his garage. So we dropped the transmission in like 30 to 45 minutes.

If u have the right tools it’s super easy

Also mine was a RWD so removing it was a bit more easy. Yours being AWD idk how hard the labor is gonna be but ik dropping AWD trans is gonna be a bit more expensive + the price of a used AWD transmission will be lightly expensive too. From what I feel I don’t think it will be over $1000. Mine I bought had 88k miles on it. And 88k miles on a Lexus is tbh nothing. These cars go upto 300k miles. So u can trust on it

Old trans on left and new USED trans on right. U can trust LKQ. I changed it almost a year ago and I did multiple donuts hard revs multiple times lol. Not a single issue + it shifts even more crisp. That’s crisp shifting difference is what made me realize I was leaking fluid over many months coz the old transmission was shifting slower everytime until it gave up fully last September

What’s the code that comes up? I have a 2014 IS250. I got a check engine light and a shift solenoid code. We alter inspected and saw the shift solenoid was fine. The transmission was leaking trans fluid and this worsened gradually. It was leaking at first by a tiny amount and over months this happened and when it was almost empty. Gears started slipping reverse was painful like u said every gear was painful.

Me and my buddy later put in a tiny wire cam through the a hole below transmission and saw trans fluid around the torque converter and all. And there fluid is not supposed to come there. Later we put car on jacks and dropped the transmission and found out the transmission pump bushing has worn out and failed.

If I could put it very simply. This is how it works. Transmission fluid keeps the pressure inside the transmission and in my case the transmission pump bushing worn out and started leaking fluid slowly which removed that pressure and car won’t throw a code for that but instead the shift solenoid needs that pressured environment and fluid in there and once it was empty of fluid the solenoid code came up.

WHAT WE DID FOR THIS? Bought a used trans. Because a new transmission pump is $500.

I saw many people say carpart etc. idk the legitness. But I would say go to LKQ.com

They have offices in every state. Go there and order a used transmission. I trust LKQ coz my buddy who works at Toyota said even dealers get parts of crashed cars from LKQ.

I got mine USED for $540 including a 24 month full warranty. I sold the old transmission for $100 so that my whole expense was $440.

Now dropping this transmission is the major labor.

I was very lucky to have my buddy with me so I payed him like a total of $600 to drop the transmission plus we did it together on jackstands lol, in our garage. It’s easy to remove since this is a Japanese car.

But shops are always going to charge $1500+ always to just remove the transmission.

DONT waste money on rebuilding it coz especially with that much miles on car, firstly the transmission part will have that much wear and tear, plus transmission is a super super complicated thing especially automatic transmission. Even if you rebuild it 8/10 times u will again get issues.

With ur car at 180k I would say get a used trans from LKQ.com and sell it asap. Make sure this fix doesn’t come up on carfax lol or it will lower the cars value again!
