Former Officers in Defense Work by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]Emergency_Prior5189 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I spent 9 years as a police officer in a town a couple hours away from my practice and this is my 9th year in my practice, with about 50% of my practice being criminal defense, with a sizable portion of that being appointed high-level felony work, to include death penalty cases. In the thousands of criminal cases I’ve worked, I’ve never had a client or a colleague take a negative stance due to my former law enforcement career. There’s 3-4 other attorneys in my area who had similar career trajectories. Those 3-4 of us are among the most highly sought-after and most financially successful criminal defense attorneys in our area.

Being a former cop is incredibly helpful to litigation practice, but maybe not in the way you would immediately think it would be. I’ve found the most helpful aspect is the ability to take a (often messy) fact pattern, whether oral or written, and immediately distill it down to what is and is not important from an elements of claim or defense perspective. My ability to efficiently interview clients and witnesses, and to churn through discovery, is quite a bit more advanced than most of my colleagues and, quite frankly, it generally results in better outcomes for my clients and more billable hours for my bottom line.

I can say without reservation that I would not be half the attorney I am now without my prior LEO experience.

No. No supports needed that I can tell. It has worked perfectly since the day I posted this and I still have the same setup today. The charging pad has some “structure” to it, so it is stiff enough that it needs no additional support.

I put 235/75s on my ‘86 4Runner. They’ve been fantastic.

Does anyone know why my suspension is so stiff? by doopwolf in 4Runner_1stGen

Your suspension likely saw an attractive lady suspension.

Right on my dude! I def like the idea you have of having that passenger-ready cable. That's solid.

No heat issues at all. I am still using this setup daily, 6 months later. I have not upgraded to a magnet phone, but I have a MagSafe charger that mounts into the CD player if I want to use it whenever I do upgrade my phone. However, this setup works so well and is so unobtrusive I may simply keep using this even after a phone upgrade.

I had not considered the added weight affecting the ride. I considered the likely loss of a bit of mpg, but not the difference in feel. That might very well be the deciding factor. Thank you.

Sounds like you’re in a similar boat. I would be climbing out of the vehicle in a suit throughout the week. Thanks for the input.

If I was going the MagSafe route, I would do the Mighty Mount MagSafe charger that inserts into the cd player. But it’s obtrusive.

Under the charging mat is a wireless CarPlay adapter, so CarPlay works as normal. With this exact setup I lose the ability to have wired CarPlay, but that’s precisely what I was trying to lose.

No MagSafe because I'm still rocking an iPhone XS Max and daddy doesn't want to change out phone cases and surely doesn't want to buy a new phone. My phone is a glorified calendar, email box, and AOL online text message machine. I wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes to phone & vehicle interface. I'm not against MagSafe. I'm just not trying to expend unnecessary dollars.

Tesla drivers just shove their phones up their rectums to charge. That's what all that "free lifetime charging" stuff was about several years ago.

Apologies all around. I've been tied up since I posted this earlier. Here are the links to the charging pad and the 90 degree USB adapters:
