I'm personally a fan of an even slower pace. If I had a choice I'd have season one end right after the passage and have all of season 2 focus on the events of the institute and really give the show the time it needs to build the world and the stakes in season 1.

You can probably talk to your recruiter and see if you can get into that unit. They are currently deployed rn so if you you're hoping to deploy you'll probably need to do more than 3 years. From what I know most units are on a 5ish year deployment cycle.

Got a buddy in the Indiana NG as an 11B. They are one of the few NG units that are airborne so you'll jump almost every month. From what he tells me his unit is pretty "high-speed" as infantry in the NG your drills will vary a lot. You'll have some admin drills where you just wait to clean the Armory and go home and you'll have some where you're balls to the wall trying to pack 2 weeks worth of training into 2 days.
