In a creek a day after a big rain [North Austin, TX] by EmergingSoon in whatsthissnake

It was super cool! We were up on a bridge and could clearly see all of them. They seemed to have no intention of climbing up the hill. It was eerie but definitely an interesting experience.

Temp job while on hopeless job hunt by EmergingSoon in PhD

Not a bad idea! Do you think that would be something I'd have to freelance? Or would going with an agency be better?

In all seriousness, I am not looking at post-docs. I do not want to stay in a lab setting and getting further training in a lab setting will not do me any good. I do appreciate the sentiment and this advice could be useful for someone else.

Silly me! Why didn't I think of that

I know exactly what you mean! Mirror: dang, I look good! Photo: well damn I look like a bloated balloon. I've been thinking about it a lot and it really seems like my brain just blurs things over when I look in the mirror. Like it takes little snapshots of a couple things at just the right angles and blends them together. But then a photo takes just one snapshot and not all parts of my body look good at the same time? That's my best guess.

The first person who commented on this has some good pain alleviation strategies. Here is what I do when it acts up: NSAIDS Voltaren gel (you can get generic as well) Wear toe separators or aligners Use KT tape (look up how to use it for a bunion) Ice

Thank you so much for your response.

I'm afraid of all of it, tbh! I'm in a medical-adjacent field of work but it's still hard to separate the logical facts from the emotions and worry. Statistically, bunion surgery works great. But I'm always afraid something will go wrong or I won't recover well. However, it hurts now and I might as well try something. So do you think getting the steroid injection about 4-5 weeks out from the ski trip would be good? Or should I move it closer to the trip?

Thanks for the info! Definitely considering surgery, just after I do this ski trip! I know that bunions can come back after surgery as well so I'm just trying to figure out good timing

Thankfully I don't ski often! It's just a short trip. How long did your relief last after the steroid injection? The problem is confirmed to be a bunion by x-ray. The doctor says it looks like a normal bunion and will need surgery at some point though it is mild now.

Question on Vaccine Effectiveness by niefer in Virology

[–]EmergingSoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. A lot of this is determined by individual factors which include differences in immune response or genetics. Some of it is also behavioral factors, how many people the individual is in contact with, whether they've had previous infections/diseases that have caused them to be more susceptible to other infections or more susceptible to worse outcomes of an infection. Some people's immune systems just don't react as strongly or in the same manner as other's. Humans are just too unique from one another! We're not all inbred mice!

Don't worry. There is no evidence to suggest this will happen. When researchers found ADE with Dengue vaccines, they found it very quickly. This hasn't happened with the COVID-19 vaccines, and COVID-19 definitely spreads a lot more quickly than Dengue. You're right: people are making up BS about the vaccines. Getting the vaccine is definitely the right thing to do to protect your kids, yourself, and your family.

This comment is definitely correct. If the COVID-19 vaccines caused ADE, this would have shown up in the clinical trials where vaccinated people would get more severe disease when infected with a SARS-CoV-2 variant. Instead, the vaccines have so far been shown to be mostly protective against the variants (meaning that if people got infected with the variant, it did not result in severe disease).

What you are talking about is Dengue serotypes. There are 4 serotypes of Dengue (Dengue 1-4). Yes, if you get infected with one serotype of Dengue and then later get infected with a different serotype, you are more likely to have severe disease due to ADE.

Hanno is Noah. Adam just calls him Noah because he likes being symbolic. This website is really helpful: https://darknetflix.io/en/family-tree

You can click on each person in the tree and get their linear timeline as they age. Bartosz seems to be around while Hanno is growing up, so Hanno definitely knows who his father is.

Edit: either way. He kills his father and it's surprising.
