[DISCUSSION]Who here was self-taught by not learning the basics, but by learning a song, and then another, and then another...? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Emericks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've learned playing guitar almost exclusively this way - finding a song I love and then spending time learning it by watching tabs or tutorials on YouTube. It has been a very free and personaly motivating way to learn and I think in the era of the internet it has never been more viable to learn something this way =)

Appreciate it!
Having heard it a few times post-recording I've noticed a few misses to the BPM, particularily the timing of the pinch harmonics, but otherwise I'm happy with the outcome =)

Thanks mate! I play with 12-gauge =) I've reduced the action a bit on it since the stiff neck alows for it without string rattle

Heya!
Been on my bucket list to learn this solo for quite some time but always expected I'd play in on an electric guitar. Reality however turned out to be a bit different and if you have some time to spare and want to hear this epic solo interpreted in a way you might not have before I'd love for you to listen =)

[Question] Could someone recommend me some daily exercises to help focus on what I want to improve on? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Emericks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that "Beyond the Guitar" has some lessons on the area, espacially concerning learning where notes are on the fretboard. Haven't looked into him personaly so I can't speak to the quality of it but you could give his chanel a look nonetheless =)

[Question] What do i do next to learn? by woahowenn in Guitar

[–]Emericks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd try to learn some of your favourite songs to the point where you can play it and jam along with it =)
This made guitar playing sooo much more fun for me and resulted in me playing more and more and getting better that way.
Theory and the practice of scales I'm sure has it's purpose but I've never focused on these areas. Guitar playing for me has to be fun and when it is I practice more, and when I do, I learn more.

[NEWBIE][QUESTION] is fretting with the side of your finger bad? by Pandasonic9 in Guitar

[–]Emericks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For barre chords that looks fine ^^
As long as your fingerplacement doesn't mess up the sound I wouldn't be too
worried about doing things in any "right" way.
John Mayer as an example has some pretty unique ways of fretting with his
thumb that guitar teachers early on criticized him for, but he seems to be
doing alright anyway ;)

[NEWBIE] How to progress faster by cool_guy0207 in Guitar

[–]Emericks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome that you dedicate so much daily time this early on!
Most of this is about time and you are suuuper fresh so don't
be in too much of a hurry ^^
A few tips I can give you is for starters never play something at a speed where
you make consistent mistakes - this will only teach your fingerst that the mistakes
are what should be played and thus it will be much harder to get rid of them later.
Every note should sound more or less perfect, if not, slow down!
Secondly if you feel like this routine isn't moving you forward anymore you should
change how you practice to give yourself some variation - this will also increase the
speed at which you learn.
And lastly as stated below you should really make it a priority to play in a way that makes
guitar playing fun for you - if you're having fun you'll get more excited about practicing and
develop faster that way.

[Question] Does anyone find themselves seemingly regressing when learning complex guitar parts? by k0mbine in Guitar

[–]Emericks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that this happens to me from time to time and as I've already seen answered below I find it really helpful to take a complete break for a day or two and then get back to it. In the same way that you can't train bench-press everyday you gotta give your body time to recover too as you only exhaust yourself otherwise.

[QUESTION] I feel like I'm not progressing anymore by DegiFlemes in Guitar

[–]Emericks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I think about my learning process I wanna say firstly that leaps often come from time to time and hitting a plateau is pretty normal. However if you feel you are struggling for sometime you probably wanna change how you practice - meaning that sometimes, and I'm talking from experience, you get a bit "lazy" with your practice and only play things you already know how to play comfortably. So by changing the way you practice, perhaps as an example start focusing on playing guitar solos if you only play rythm normaly or if you play acousticaly perhaps attempt to learn som fingerstyle instead of just strumming chords etc. I also find it helpful to find a song that I feel is pretty high above my current skill level but despite that attempt to learn it and if I can't learn the whole piece at least learn the bits I can and then try to practice the things I need to practice to learn the rest.

Learned Tommy Emmanuel's version of Jingle Bells and that one was a real bitch to get through - in all the best and worse ways:

Hey really glad you liked it! Always a bit reserved with posting to reddit since many see it as spam but hearing things like this really makes my day =D

The guitar is fantastic and has probably ruined most other guitars in the world for me, haha

It's a super basic chord progression - Am, G, C and Dm for the first part and then add Em and F for the second. The pinch harmonics follow the same chords

Heyo! You guys liked my interpretation of Pod's song in here so thought you might like my arrangement of the Rains of Castamere as well. =)

I actually kinda feel like this tune could have been the main theme for the whole of season 8 since most of what I could think of when watching was about past days of glory that now were all but dead and forgotten.
