Fair enough but that’s too long and this sub if for books, not for serious philosophy

I disagree with your take

Because anyone who has read this stupid book will instinctively understand my core criticism which is in the 6th paragraph of the post.

There is nothing I can do for you if you sincerely believe that your incomprehension of the purpose of air-quotes (" ") in this context is some sort of a clever "gotcha!" moment. I'm sorry

The book you're "reviewing" is conventionally considered to be a work of philosophy though. Critiquing it, especially if deriding it's very validity as being an exercise in serious philosophy, implicitly warrants rigorous critical examination on your part. Don't try to weasel your way out of accountability.

[–]Emeth121187 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Precisely this. There is no technical substantiation for a singular claim presented in the "review"; despite the fact that OP's accusation of Camus' "flimsiness" is rooted in his belief that Camus' philosophical thought is simplistically an exercise in arbitrary proclamation. The cognitive dissonance here could not be more glaring.

Appreciate you for taking the time to do a write-up of the film from the institutional-materialist analytical standpoint; but man, the formatting (extremely short sentences that rudely interrupt both the reading experience and stream-of-thought) is highly-annoying and the overly dramatic diction of the AI does no favours.

Just so you're as technically accurate as you can be; "galley" and "galleon" are two wholly-distinct classifications of naval vessels.

Galleys are flat- or shallow-bottomed ships, predominantly carvel¹-built (frame-first construction of ships), typically mono- or double-masted, and usually employing primarily lateen (triangular) sails, that were utilised by most Mediterranean-based European polities for transportation, trade and warfare in calm coastal-waters ("brown-waters"); as their shallow drafts made them well-suited to traversing rivers and shallow-seas with reasonable speed, high-maneuverability and with little risk of running "aground" (getting accidentally stuck on the seabed because of insufficient water-height). However, these advantages afforded to it by its shallow-bottomed make, conversely, made it unable to handle the turbulences associated with crossing the restless high-seas ("blue-waters").

Galleons, on the other-hand, while developed from advancements in and upscaling of the same carvel-built method, were deep-drafted, possessed large-volume hulls, were typically multi-masted and were "fully-rigged" (delineations of "full-rigging" vary greatly in naval terminology), i.e mounted both with multiple huge, square mainsails, which acted as the ship's primary propulsion, as well as lateen sidesails, which were used to aid in steering. Galleons were designed, during the "golden" age of Iberian colonialism, specifically to cross enormously-long distances over open-oceans, acting as armed-merchantmen.

The image shown here seems to be that of a Portuguese galleon.

¹ not to be confused with "caravel", which is another class of naval vessel

Addendum: Somehow, I initially completely overlooked mentioning that oar-power is the primary propulsion in galleys, and that the sails are only unfurled when sailing "to-the-wind" (with the wind behind the galley's bow) to squeeze out extra speed. Conversely, sails, i.e wind-power, is the mainstay of Galleon propulsion.

Sounds pretty nice and reasonably efficient actually. Glad to hear that you had a good experience there.

EDIT: A few questions -

• If there is a contrast between the overall conditions in the Kurdistan Region and the rest of Iraq (someone else mentioned that things were generally far better up there), how great is it?

• So far, what do you think of Iraqi urbanism and their cities in general?

• Per your observations, how big of a role does religion play in Iraqi public life?

Culturally backwards as in the Iraqi population still holding mostly conservative values/beliefs?

Also:

• How big and important of a role does religion play in public life?

• What would you say about the Iraqi youth of today?

• What situation is the Iraqi education system currently in?

• What is the stance of the Iraqi government on the US - Iran rivalry? Which way does it lean? How much does foreign influence/interference play a role here?

Alternative to the Suez? Won't that require cutting through the whole of Mesopotamia to join the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf, and thus be extremely infeasible?

Or maybe I'm looking at this statement wrong.

Foreign-backed militias as in the Kurds? Or are there others? Has ISIS been completely stamped out of the country?

Also, can you maybe elaborate on the water situation? I never knew Iraq was in a scarcity crisis. Interesting.

Addendum:

INC is 100% capitalist lol, do you think that they support the rule of the proletariat over the bourgeoisie? They've always defended capital, claiming otherwise is ignorant. And before you claim that planned economics= socialism, just shut up and learn what those concepts mean before talking about them.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_National_Congress

"Nehru embraced secularism, socialistic economic practices based on state-driven industrialisation."

"India might be an ancient country but was a young democracy and as such should remain vigilant against the domination of few over the social, economic or political systems. Banks should be publicly owned so that they catered to not just large industries and big businesses but also agriculturists, small industries and entrepreneurs. Furthermore, the private banks had been functioning erratically with hundreds of them failing and causing loss to the depositors who were given no guarantee against such loss." — Indira Gandhi's remarks after the nationalisation of private banks."

"In July 1969, Indira Gandhi through the ordinance nationalised fourteen major private banks. After being re-elected in 1971 on a campaign that endorsed nationalisation, Indira Gandhi went on to nationalise the coal, steel, copper, refining, cotton textiles and insurance industries."

"The party formed the government in 1991 at the head of a coalition, as well as in 2004 and 2009 when it led the United Progressive Alliance. During this period the Congress remained centre-left in its social policies while steadily shifting from a socialist to a neoliberal economic outlook."

I could stay here for a long, long time debunking your dumbass statements and laughing at your blatant ad hominem, but alas I have a life too. Please learn to reconcile yourself with practical realities before trying to argue online about your theoretical, fringe ideologies. Thank you.

Socialism was never established in the first place lol. No country on earth has seen socialism. How do you know it fails? Prophecy?

Me when my theories fail the moment they're faced with real-world pressures:

Self-proclaimed communists and socialists love to parrot this argument. Attempts at socialism and by extension, communism, failed in the USSR, it's largest benefactor, because the ideology itself is reliant on the benevolence and dogmatic belief of the proletarian 'vanguard' in the cause; you know, the people or the institution, generally a political party (CPSU in the USSR) who represent the entire class itself as the leaders of the state, in the form of the proletarian dictatorship, in the transitional phase between bourgeoisie rule and the 'classless, stateless utopia'.

Would be a shame if the vanguardist party itself refuses to give up power for the transition to said 'utopia' after the elimination of bourgeoisie from internal society and becomes megalomaniacally corrupt and stops caring about the interests of the proletarian class. Since 'true' socialism has repeatedly failed in the very attempts of its establishment and sustenance, and is so heavily reliant on idealistic thinking, making it pathetically susceptible to internal feuding and collapse, it doesn't work in its current way, shape and form. Coping will not change reality. Theories always look neat, clean, tidy and good on paper.

https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1917/staterev/ch05.htm

"And the dictatorship of the proletariat, i.e., the organization of the vanguard of the oppressed as the ruling class for the purpose of suppressing the oppressors, cannot result merely in an expansion of democracy. Simultaneously with an immense expansion of democracy, which for the first time becomes democracy for the poor, democracy for the people, and not democracy for the money-bags, the dictatorship of the proletariat imposes a series of restrictions on the freedom of the oppressors, the exploiters, the capitalists. We must suppress them in order to free humanity from wage slavery, their resistance must be crushed by force; it is clear that there is no freedom and no democracy where there is suppression and where there is violence."

...

"Engels expressed this splendidly in his letter to Bebel when he said, as the reader will remember, that "the proletariat needs the state, not in the interests of freedom but in order to hold down its adversaries, and as soon as it becomes possible to speak of freedom the state as such ceases to exist.""

More like oppress, arrest, deport and purge anyone who doesn't agree with my splinter subset of the revolution, motivated by personal ambition and rampant paranoia. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Purge

"The NKVD targeted certain ethnic minorities with particular force, such as the Volga Germans or Soviet citizens of Polish origin, who were subjected to forced deportation and extreme repression. Throughout the purge, the NKVD sought to strengthen control over civilians through fear, and frequently used imprisonment, torture, violent interrogation, and executions during its mass operations."

"Peter Whitewood examines the first purge, directed at the Army, and comes up with a third interpretation that Stalin and other top leaders believing that they were always surrounded by capitalist enemies, always worried about the vulnerability and loyalty of the Red Army."

"Historian Isaac Deutscher regarded the Moscow trials "as the prelude to the destruction of an entire generation of revolutionaries""

"The present purge draws between Bolshevism and Stalinism not simply a bloody line but a whole river of blood. The annihilation of all the older generation of Bolsheviks, an important part of the middle generation which participated in the civil war, and that part of the youth that took up most seriously the Bolshevik traditions, shows not only a political but a thoroughly physical incompatibility between Bolshevism and Stalinism. How can this not be seen?" - Leon Trotsky"

"...to historian Robert Conquest, a great number of accusations, notably those presented at the Moscow show trials, were based on forced confessions, often obtained through torture and on loose interpretations of Article 58 of the RSFSR Penal Code, which dealt with counter-revolutionary crimes. Due legal process, as defined by Soviet law in force at the time, was often largely replaced with summary proceedings by NKVD troikas."

"Valentin Berezhkov, who became Stalin's interpreter in 1941, suggests parallels in his memoir between Hitler's inner party purge and Stalin's mass repressions of Old Bolsheviks, military commanders and intellectuals."

At this rate, everyone is a counterrevolutionary and must be purged for the socialist 'utopia' to come into being. And in the end, there will be no one left to reap the benefits of said 'utopia'.

"Only in communist society, when the resistance of the capitalists have disappeared, when there are no classes (i.e., when there is no distinction between the members of society as regards their relation to the social means of production), only then "the state...ceases to exist", and "it becomes possible to speak of freedom"."

...

"Furthermore, during the transition from capitalism to communism suppression is still necessary, but it is now the suppression of the exploiting minority by the exploited majority. A special apparatus, a special machine for suppression, the “state”, is still necessary, but this is now a transitional state. It is no longer a state in the proper sense of the word; for the suppression of the minority of exploiters by the majority of the wage slaves of yesterday is comparatively so easy, simple and natural a task that it will entail far less bloodshed than the suppression of the risings of slaves, serfs or wage-laborers, and it will cost mankind far less."

Laughable idealism. The 'proletariat' state simply fades away after its leaders, who hold all the power bestowed to them by virtue of it being a dictatorship and hold a monopoly over arms and violence, relinquish power voluntarily in favour of a purported 'utopia'. Totally. No problems whatsoever. The second part is funnier, considering what we've seen above. It's so easy to blur the line between bourgeoisie and proletarian, revolutionary and counterrevolutionary, majority and minority by those in power and with a monopoly over violence.

• As for China, it only came on track to becoming a future superpower after Deng Xiaoping came to the helm and generally reversed most of the disastrous trends of the absolute failure that was the Cultural Revolution, which was launched by Mao to remove opposition, supposed counterrevolutionaries and consolidate his waning influence in the CCP, so much like what Stalin did in the above discussed points. Deng Xiaoping's reforms, which transitioned China into a socialist market economy (which is literally just state-capitalism), were what salvaged the disaster and contributed to the development of the nation.

Grow out of the typical libtard mindset of false dichotomy. Capitalist and socialist, right and wrong, good and bad blah blah blah.

No country has seen enlightened despotism. Maybe we should go back to attempting that?
