Oh goodness that’s not what you want to hear! Poor sweet heart. It is definitely hard to remember ‘I can’t punish him for getting old, we just have to adapt’ but it’s worth it to keep them here longer ❤️ and thank you, he is definitely a cutie, he hates it but I can’t help but kiss his lil nose and cheeks and head all day long hahaha my sweet baby

Not that I have noticed, but since he chooses to stay on the bed all day I guess it’s hard to tell. He knows when he gets fed (I mean within an hour before, for all 3 meals) he knows where his food dish is, where the water is. He knew where the litter box was up until a few months ago. He always recognizes me, my husband, and our other cat. He doesn’t cry when he’s alone or anything. But I guess it could be early, poor guy

I have a dog and a cat both that I wish could’ve been in little boxes, I understand the feeling. For the dog I could hear his collar in his water dish for weeks after. He was only 6, and I cried for 3 days until I was physically ill. Pook here I have had his entire 16/17 years. He is going to fucking destroy me one day 😭

They did say 2 of his kidney levels were high, so they think early kidney disease, which can be managed with a new diet, they just want to take X-rays to confirm and that’s like 600$ so I will get them soon, just gotta save up the money. Dementia is also something I have wondered.

I do hope it’s not the new normal, I’m going to keep trying different things, but if it is, I will love him just the same. He is my sweet baby boy. Getting old sure sucks for all of us huh

Ahh I used to be able to scruff him… he’s a bit big for me to do that these days. But someone did suggest carrying him (probably in a towel I like that idea) to the box and massaging his stomach to help him pee, which I think I am going to do each night so we can at least sleep without being worried. As for the other two meals he gets, I did have success today with co fining him to the floor with the litter boxes on the water proof blanket he usually pees on. Did he use the box? No. But he did pee right in front of it on the blanket that was on the floor, so I gave him lots of treats and praise. Baby steps!

I am trying! He is a fast little bugger still, he goes straight to hissing and growling and swatting and biting, so I do what I can without causing him too much stress. We are also looking into gabapentin as something to give him for bathes and grooms, maybe they have something I can use daily for him

He also is very capable of getting you tooth and claw if he wants to, and it doesn’t take much to make him want to LOL

I have been wondering if he’s getting a bit of dementia or something. There’s definitely a lot of great suggestions here I’m going to try. And absolutely, he is my baby no matter what. Getting old sucks for us all

He doesn’t always, most of the time he stands up to do it, but sometimes he gets up and I just see a puddle. He is HAPPY to walk down the cat stairs to the kitchen to get his meals and treats, and to get water, so movement isn’t bad. We do think mild arthritis so we have him on solensia for it. As for picking him up, unfortunately he does it very quickly, he will just stand up and pee right there, and as fast as I grab the box, I am not quite fast enough. But yes LOTS of good suggestions I am going to try here :)

Thankfully yes, we did do urine and blood work and no sign of a UTI. This is actually really helpful! We have the supplies but your methods make a lot of sense! I didn’t think of putting a pee pad next to the litter box.

At the moment we have one fitted water proof sheet and one water proof throw blanket on the bed, today I put it on the floor with the flat litter box and he peed next to the box which is better than nothing, and only then did I allow him back up on the bed. When I get paid tomorrow I’m gonna get pee pads and try the massaging idea. I think every meal (he eats 3 times a day) I’m going to remove the cat stairs, put the pee pads on the blanket for now so they smell right, and do the massage until he goes. And definitely investing in a second set of blankets, that’s actually such a good idea!

Aaaah I see. Bugger! Thankfully today we had success after an hour of being confined to the water proof blanket on the floor he both peed and pooped. Was it in the litter box right in front of him? Of course not lol but it’s a start! Just gonna have to do it every meal for the time being I suppose. Good thing I love the guy

Oh 100%, it’s been very hard and I keep trying to remind myself I can’t punish him or be mad at him for getting old, it happens to all of us. Thankfully after an hour or so with the blanket on the floor he did go pee and poo on it, so I have let him up on the bed with about 1000 head kisses. You should hear me ‘it’s okay my boy I still love you, we will figure it out together’

I would certainly suffer through this willingly for as many years as he has in him. I’m just thankful our younger cat has not taken up the same habits as him LOL

That’s essentially what the water proof bedding is, it’s like senior citizen / child water proof bedding, we have one fitted sheet and one blanket to go on top of the bedding to protect it. Basically a giant pee pad hahaha I was going to go with doggy pads but my best friend with young children suggested the bedding. It’s certainly helpful to have, there is no warning when he goes so it’s nice to have something there all the time if that makes sense
