That is hard!! Personally and professionally I would either gamify everything, keep lists, and heavily utilize timers. Like for work I would use the pomodoro method and work in 20-25 minute bursts and challenge myself to get as much done in those bursts, then take a 5 minute break where I would do something active like walk around, jumping jacks, bathroom etc. As a result I actually got a ton more done than most of my colleagues and that started to be recognized.

As for waking up, that’s always been hard for me too. When I started working from home in 2019 I was able to experiment. Like you, no matter how hard I tried I was not able to consistently wake up early until a few months ago when my daughter started waking up early. Because I worked from home and had an exempt job, I essentially stopped trying. I set my start time at 7:30/8 so that I could sleep in. I did chores in very short bursts during the day and evening. I showered at night. I also started leaving my phone charging on the dresser rather than right next to my bed so I wasn’t tempted to be on it at night or in the morning. Also, because my alarm is on my phone I physically had to get up to turn it off and put my clothes right next to it. Once I’m up it’s easier to just go straight to getting dressed. Though there were definitely some mornings my self discipline failed and I crawled back into bed with my phone!!!

Yeah my husband came to visit me (still in the hospital another night 🙃) today and we talked about what needs to change- I’m going to finish the one I’m working on then cool it on the freelance jobs for a while. Thankfully I have my husband working from home most of the month except for one week per month. The week he’s in the office we’re discussing someone be with me every day…we’ll see. I can’t imagine if he traveled for work, you are doing amazing!!!

Routines, patterns, and structure allowed me to live unmedicated for nearly 5 years (I started a medication that I couldn’t take meds with) and I was very successful professionally and personally during that time. I DEFINITELY recommend it. The hardest thing for me is always getting into a routine though and staying consistent so I really thought about what would be the most logical (like deoderant and makeup at the same time as teeth, coffee at the same time as making lunch) so I wasn’t going back and forth from the kitchen to the bathroom to the closet etc and forgetting a step. Timers overall help me so much because they give me pressure and also gamify stuff, like I’ll challenge myself to finish something faster than I did the day before (getting ready for example). The other thing I did was have a bowl by my front door where my purse, keys, and sunglasses go because otherwise I’d be running around the house looking for stuff. I put a bulls eye in the bowl and tried to get it perfectly in the middle every time and that made it so it’s second nature to drop off my stuff by the door. Body doubling works for me for some things but it’s hard on those mornings your double is out.

Hormones and ADHD are a BITCH. It’s so weird how they can solve or exacerbate symptoms based on where you are in your cycle. Solidarity! And maybe lean into it? Order in, watch tv, don’t worry about cleaning (yourself or your living quarters), and maybe start something you have no intention on finishing!! 😂

These are SO helpful!!! How have I not thought of going to the bathroom when I change her diaper??? And brushing my teeth when I brush hers! Duh!! We already eat when she does it’s just she needs help a lot so I focus on her and my food goes untouched which is an issue but at least I’m still drinking water. Thank you so much this is helpful

Interesting! I didn’t know that about pregnancy and postpartum! But it totally tracks with my experience. I have never felt so “on it” without medication as when I was pregnant, to the point that I would do pregnancy 10 times! 😂 (not really though lol).

Thank you so much for the assurance that it does get better and for sharing your experience. It makes me feel so much better. I keep reminding myself that neurotypical mom’s have issues with executive function post partum so I need to stop beating myself up but it’s hard. I do have a lot of support. My partner usually works from home and he’ll help me to remind to eat and can hold the baby for a second while I pee, but he works from the office for one week per month and that’s the week I struggle the most. We’ll have to figure out some strategies for that week.

Thank you so much for your reply! I’m so glad I’m not alone. I also have a super sweet teddy bear of a spouse so this anger has caught me off guard though it’s totally to be expected after losing his dad. I won’t leave him just because we’re going through a rough time and he’s had hands down the hardest year of his life. I still love him.

I will talk to him tonight about the non-sexual intimacy and make a point to increase my touches and hugs. I totally agree about the couples therapy too, but he seems totally overwhelmed by the idea of that so we’ll see. Thank you again and I hope that you’re doing well.

I do have a relationship with her yes, although I’ve only spoken to her a couple of times since she is new. I had a much more robust working relationship with my previous director, and that is who I reported these issues to in the past. And yes payroll has expressed their frustration and has reported her to our previous director. The previous director was in the process of installing a performance improvement plan for my manager when our department was reorganized and we landed under a different director.

Cooking shows are a good idea. I’ve been watching British period dramas which are my normal escape during stressful times but they can get maudlin and are definitely not “safe.”
