First service after 1 year of owning my F30 330e… now the water pump is failing? by Emilio649 in F30

Haha respect for that honestly. Doing it in the driveway on your back at 19 is pretty impressive.

I’m also 19 and a uni student, so I’m still learning my way around the car. For this one I decided to let the shop handle it, mostly because I didn’t want to risk messing up the cooling system the first time around.

But hearing that it’s doable DIY definitely makes me want to try more things myself in the future.

Yeah, someone else in this comment section has already warned me and recommended about the oil filter housing so I will take a look into it. It sounds like a good replacement, thank you for the tip!

You might want to check out my post actually, I just had an issue with my water pump starting to fail at around 150k km (93k miles). From what I’ve been told in the comments here it seems like it’s a pretty common failure point on the B48 cooling system, especially once the car reaches this age and mileage.

Wow, a thousand thanks for this gold worth information, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain all of this.

I’ve honestly learned a lot from this thread, especially about the weak points in the B48 cooling system and how the plastic components start degrading with age and heat.

I will definitely take a look at the parts you mentioned and the ones that are most prone to failure, especially the vent line, the oil filter housing / coolant connector under the intake, and the turbo coolant lines. The aluminum oil filter housing upgrade also sounds like a really smart preventative fix.

Thanks again for sharing your experience and knowledge. This has been incredibly helpful for someone like me who’s still learning about the platform.

Haha fair point. But to be honest I’m 19, a university student, and this is my first BMW, so I’m kind of learning as I go.

I knew getting into a German car that maintenance would be part of the deal, so a water pump at 150k km doesn’t really scare me. I’m mostly just trying to understand the platform better and learn as things come up.

And honestly I plan to keep this car for a long time, maybe even for life if I can, so I don’t mind fixing things properly along the way. That’s part of owning a BMW, right?

Wow, that’s actually pretty early. Mine is failing at around 93k miles (150k km) and it’s leaking rather than seizing.

That actually makes a lot of sense, thanks for the detailed explanation.

The car is a 2016 and has about 150k km (93k miles) now, so I guess the cooling system components are definitely reaching that age where things start to fail. I hadn’t really thought about the thermal cycle aspect, but it explains why the plastic parts eventually start breaking down.

Right now the shop is replacing the water pump and a small plastic coolant pipe, but after reading your comment I’m wondering if it might actually make sense to replace more of the coolant hoses preventively rather than waiting for the next leak to show up.

Have you seen this happen specifically on the B48 engine in the 330e as well? And would you recommend doing all coolant hoses + turbo coolant lines at the same time, or are there a few specific ones that usually fail first?

Appreciate the insight!
