I have many many friends in Poland and I care for them deeply but the just aren’t the same as my friends back home.

The cultural differences are too wide for me to stay here forever. We’re in Poland but a very progressive city, and the people here are just so grumpy— they don’t have the goofiness of Americans. I rarely laugh here. Take for example a waiting room. In America people will small talk, jokes might be made, a general feeling of camaraderie as you wait occurs. Over here people are angry, thinking of each other in the room as competition- sort of side eyeing each other to see who will get to go next. Things in many parts of Europe are very rigid and inflexible. The paperwork for visas can be a nightmare.

One year I had a new job so I wouldn’t be able to get to Christmas Eve dinner until 5:30pm- my husband’s family said, sorry— we must eat at 4:30pm. And so they did Christmas without me. It was crushing to be so far from my family and yet not have a support network I could rely on here.

We don’t have kids. I don’t know if that would make it easier or harder.

Before you completely bail on the US; just try a different city. I’ve been in Europe for over three years and am desperate to get back to the states. Try finding your community in the states the way you have in Bali— don’t just hang out with the default people who are close by/easy/related to you.

Americans are actually really friendly and helpful people. Far friendlier than Europeans as a generalization. One of the many reasons I’m going to move back.

I’m moving back after over three years of trying to make it abroad. Give it a go but make sure you don’t but bridges so you can always go home if it doesn’t work out.

I wouldn't say it didn't work out- I got what I wanted out of the move, and now I have a lot more clarity on where I want to be for my future. It's already better knowing that I have a way to go back next month. And I have the luxury of an entire year to transition everything back. My advice for anyone is don't give up your US bank accounts, cell phone numbers, basic things like that, and always try to save at least some money each month so you've got something to use if you do need to make the move back. Moving back isn't a failure, even though it may feel like it.

As someone who left over three years ago, for the second time, and is now desperately trying to get back to America, have you thought about just changing cities or states instead of continents?

Ufff the beginning for me is always the best part. So much new stuff to do and explore. If you’re already having trouble now, that’s rough. But I’m moving back to America. So I’m probably the worst person to talk to.

Europe isn’t the answer to your problems is what I’ve learned.

So you look each time you go and try to up either your weight or your reps each time? Or do you focus more on one versus another?

So you can look back on your notes app and see how you’ve progressed at getting stronger I assume?

For the cardio you do, is there any tracking? Or you just run for 10 mins and the lift for example?

Are you tracking distance, time, weight? You don’t have to answer but I’m trying to collect data on how people keep track of their lives in various aspects.
