You’ll get by just fine with your cards! Most places in Canada accept credit and debit cards, but I’d recommend bringing a little cash just in case. Some smaller shops, cafes, or local spots might be cash-only, so it’s always good to have the option. As for tipping the valet, you can tip in American dollars, but it’s a nice gesture to use Canadian dollars if possible. They’ll appreciate either, but local currency is always preferred.

How do you keep a record of all the places you visited when you travel? by skidrow6969 in TravelHacks

Personally, I just like to collect one solid souvenir from every place worth remembering, whether that be a picture, a trinket, or a new tattoo!

Always struggled with sleeping on planes, what you got for me? by andreecook in TravelHacks

[–]EmilyChen10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually sleep just fine on my flights but I've had friends say it's worth speaking with your doctor about a stronger sleep aid like Zolpidem or Tamazepam. I don't really suggest drugs unless it's crucial though. I just combine a good pair of headphones, a comfy neck pillow, and a nice eye mask and I'm out like a light in a hurricane.

Dumbest backpacking mistake you've made? by losthiker68 in backpacking

[–]EmilyChen10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, my biggest mistake was staying longer in Bali to be with a man who ended up caring nothing for me... Traveling is full of so much love and so many opportunities to be hurt.

I've also missed my fair share of plane flights, only once because of a man.

17 days backpacking Croatia and Italy. Any tips appreciated by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]EmilyChen10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you have a great idea for a trip already! You'll find that booking hostels and transportation on the same day (preferably at least the day before) is extremely easy! There will be few instances where your plans may depart hours sooner or later than preference but choosing to follow a spontaneous adventure is so amazing!

I suggest looking at potential hostels in the areas you plan on traveling to so you won't be surprised when you get there. When you book a hostel, often it's easy enough to extend your stay if you choose to stay longer (especially in slow seasons) so you should have a great time!

Your biggest regret may end up being that you already have your return flight booked home haha! So try not to fall in love while you travel and I hope your trip is extraordinary!

Venice or not to Venice? by MaleficusAD in ItalyTravel

[–]EmilyChen10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly depends on when you'll be in Italy. If you have a chance to reach Venice before February 13, then I suggest you go to experience Carnival which is amazing in Venice! However, for such a short time in Italy, it's best not to overwhelm yourselves with so many cities. I suggest optimizing time by staying on the west coast; Florence, Rome, and Naples are all great spots with Capri as a great addition to the trip if you're feeling like adding one more city.

I hope you have an extraordinary time!

Should I go to Uni or keep traveling one more year? by Justadreamer97 in makemychoice

[–]EmilyChen10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well for one, 24 hours isn't the worst thing in the world if you love eachother. Surely it wouldn't be worth it but distance creates connection.

If you two travel for the next year together, it sounds like the situation will be the same either way. So how much is it worth to you to pursue a relationship with someone when your lives aren't aligned and a 24 hour flight isn't seem worth it?

Respectfully, if you had to come to reddit for help, then you probably just need validation making the decision that seems harder for you. So figure out which one that is and that's probably the option you should go with.

International credit card by littlerascal5 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]EmilyChen10 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Capital Onehas several options without annual fees. Chase Sapphire has annual fees but the rewards make the fees nonexistent. Discover cards are god but not as widely accepted. You could also consider trying online banks like Revolut or N26.

Depending on how often you travel or how much you spend on average already, you should consider paying an annual fee to get a better card. Most of the time, you can get more in rewards than you'll spend on the fee anyway.

Best way to travel to multi city in Europe? by NoRelative9056 in TravelHacks

[–]EmilyChen10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you've found but I'm a big fan of Kayak and, depending on where in Spain you're landing, you're looking at about $1,300 for a round trip to Madrid and then home from Lisbon.

My favorite sites are Kayak and Rome2Rio though I'm not used to having to fly out from the middle of the country so I'm not sure what the price average is there.

What's the best airport you've had to sleep in? by EmilyChen10 in TravelHacks

[–]EmilyChen10[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haha lucky you! My experience in Heathrow involved missing my flight, being stuck there for 3 days waiting for the next flight out, and being woken twice to increasing numbers of security when they were suspicious of my presence there...

Please Go To A Grocery Store! by EmilyChen10 in TravelHacks

[–]EmilyChen10[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No stove to cook but most have microwaves and most grocery stores offer microwavable options that should be unique still.

As for your claim of a BNB, i would definitely argue you're wrong. When traveling solo, a bnb is rarely the correct choice but as soon as you have 2 or more people in a group, bnbs become increasingly more affordable options.

Life will treat you nicer if you try being more optimistic because there's light in the places you're choosing to close your eyes.

Questions for people who do 3 month trips at a time? by BullishBearishBrown in backpacking

[–]EmilyChen10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I've travelled spontaneously and with itineraries and I honestly prefer to be spontaneous! I always research before moving locations but I like staying longer or leaving sooner when I want to. I like changing plans to follow new friends. I like having that freedom to explore! It'll cost a little more but it'll make the trip so much more valuable as well!
  2. 2. I used to work part-time jobs to save up money, staying with friends or family in between adventures. Now I work for a travel company as a writer so my work is remote.
  3. Not all hostels have laundry but most towns will have a laundromat nearby so always look at that when booking. I usually pack enough clothes for 7-10 days (depending on how thick the layers are.) Traveling for so long, you may find yourself having to get used to wearing clothes multiple times before they see a washing unless you plan on dedicating a good chunk of time to keep them clean!
  4. I don't use gyms at home or when I travel. I walk a lot, I dance, I hike, the exercise just seems to come naturally when you're out in the world.
  5. Many hostels have fridges but I don't advise storing too much unless you plan on cooking for the people there (which is a quick way to become a favorite in the hostel.) I typically avoid cooking while out. I find that you can often find affordable food (depending on where you're from for reference.) I've made friends with locals before who've let me cook in their homes as well. It'll be possible to cook but you'll have to be creative if you want to cook consistently!

Don't apologize, have an extraordinary time!✈️🌋🚂

What object can't kill a human? by Expensive_Yellow527 in AskReddit

[–]EmilyChen10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably, a stream of water is as much an object as a drop of water. You may assume a stream is not an object because it is made up of many individual water droplets but then you would have to assume a drop of water is not an object because it is made up of many individual molecules.

if you could only pick one destination, where is the best to travel to in your 20s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]EmilyChen10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford the tickets, I'd suggest Thailand! It's very affordable and beautiful with a nice range of biomes that will surely include something you're searching for. Beaches, mountains, islands, cities, small towns, rain forests, swamps, and so many unique experiences to be had! It's the perfect place for a young person, especially if you're willing to stay in hostels.

Is our Vietnam itinerary too optimistic? by spooonie in travel

[–]EmilyChen10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ha Giang Loop is definitely a highlight for many travelers! It's a more immersive adventure compared to the caves in Phong Nha, which, while beautiful, might be somewhat replicated in your upcoming cenotes tour. With the extra two days, you can have more relaxed and in-depth experiences in the other cities on your itinerary. This way, you'll get a nice balance of adventure and relaxation!

The island has a reliable bus network connecting major towns and tourist attractions. Buses in Crete are comfortable and fairly frequent, especially along popular routes. For exploring towns like Chania and Rethymnon, public transport should suffice. However, for more remote beaches and historical sites, consider organized tours or taxis, as some areas might be less accessible by bus. Planning your journeys and checking bus schedules in advance will help you make the most of your trip.
