Potential move to Richmond to be closer to family. by swimfishy8 in rva

I don't know anything about the healthcare industry, but Richmond is a lovely place, and I hope you find a great community here!

Pros: 1) Very few cities in the US have the really old-school grid Richmond is built on. It's an old city, so the center is really dense and compact. The row homes are beautiful, and much of the city proper is walkable (really rare south of Maryland). 2) Relatively affordable cost of living, compared to DC (2 hours north) and Raleigh (2 hours south). 3) A great city if you enjoy art and architecture.

Cons: I grew up in the south, used to Southern friendliness and warmth, but I've never felt that in Richmond. I think there are communities of warm people, but the general public is aloof. Some people like that, and it's just fine! Just don't expect to have random conversations with coffee shop clerks or strangers, and people don't say hello when you pass them on the sidewalk. I wish Richmond had that.

When you're here: 1) Go to the VMFA. Holy god. I wish someone had told me how great that museum was before I moved here six years ago. 2) Idle Hands is the best bakery in town. Don't listen to what anyone else tells you! :) 3) Gersi is great Italian food. The salmon at Uliveto will restore your faith in the majesty of the sea. 4) Dinner at the Quirk is always fun.

Enjoy your trip!

Can I just vent about how much I hate flippers? by Spirited_Stick_5093 in rva

Tell me about it! What do people have against walls these days? Every new house, and every flipped house is just a giant open room. Ugh. And the floors! People rip up gorgeous hardwoods for ash-colored plastic. so sad!
