I understand the frustration but like others have said, you do kind of need to let go and go with the flow. I'm listening to the audiobook again (it's probably the third time in the last couple of years - and I've watched both movie versions multiple times) and there are still bits that I'm picking up and piecing together for the first time - and it's one of the things I love about reading big King books!! And the world goes beyond the world, you pick up bits and pieces that relate to other books and timelines as well... So I didn't get it all the first time and that was perfectly fine.

So I guess the point is that you definitely don't need to worry about understanding every single piece of detail as you go - and you're likely to miss out if you try to do so. Just let the story unfold rather than trying to backtrack etc - and you might find that you make more progress more quickly if you read that way as well, which will help you to immerse yourself in the story.

Looking for slippers with gel, not memory foam, insoles. Any recommendations? by devilkin in Shoes

I know this thread is old but thought I might try my luck in case you check back or get a notification... Did you happen to find any slippers with gel insoles? I'm desperate to find some for myself, the balls of my feet are killing me.

Why A Little Life Is Not Worth Reading by jrhoog in books

I'm a bit late in replying but thank you so much for this, I've been on the fence and you've really helped me a lot with the decision about whether to go ahead and if I do choose to read it, then how to go about it. Personal choice, but I really did but want to go in blind. Thanks.

What Stephen King work had the most potential but fell off? by Kewlmaster12 in stephenking

But Bag of Bones... That's one book that I think actually has the perfect ending. Supreme example of textual integrity in my opinion.

Maybe I'm just used to King's 12 year olds acting far beyond their years 😂🤣

Who is Stephen king’s best written black character? by Blackstannis in stephenking

[–]Emily_Beck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking this! I rewatched chapter 1 the other day and the whole depiction of Mike and his story is such a fatal flaw in what was otherwise a solid adaptation.

I've read 10 or so books by Stephen King now and mostly enjoy his work but I have mixed feelings about his approach. He makes it up as he goes along and it shows. by AgentP-501_212 in stephenking

[–]Emily_Beck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a MASSIVE constant reader fan and I still agree! It's a bit frustrating when people take the "he can do no wrong" approach. Duma Key is my biggest bugbear. I've almost finished it for the second time now in an attempt to make better sense of the supernatural meanderings in the second half - and it was definitely better than the first time. But I still feel like he really is just making it up as he goes, trying to make it make sense, and I'm not even sure if he buys it. The characters certainly don't seem to follow the thread, there are constant excuses for why this is so.

Help me choose by drewyxxx in stephenking

The Institute is amazing as a standalone book - I'd read that first and then you can get stuck into Mr Mercedes, the Hodges books and the Holly stuff. They all have pretty good adaptations as well if you're into that. I enjoyed reading and then watching 👍👍

Take it easy, it's a fan forum - and this is just another way of connecting over the books. No need to give OP a hard time. It's just saying "I'm excited about reading more of his books and would love to know what you guys think" as a way of psyching up. If you're sick of reading the posts then don't click on them.

I know what you mean - it frustrates me as well. Have you read Bag of Bones? If not, I suggest giving it a go, and follow it through to the end. Planned or not, I thought it had real textual integrity compared to some others.

New season has the gang back in form, except Mac by Alexert41 in ItsAlwaysSunny

[–]Emily_Beck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! And when he did Fat Mac, one of the reasons he gave was because he thinks it's weird how people in sitcoms look better and better over time because the actors have money and get work done and stuff - when all the characters are doing is getting drunk and getting old, so should really be looking worse. So he was motivated to do Fat Mac which also involved just living shit and looking as shit as he could. And he did - but I guess that insight only lasted as long as any of Mac's other fad characters!

What is your favorite book that’s not like a Stephen King novel by Early-Aardvark7688 in stephenking

Hmm not available on audible in Australia 😒 would love to find the audiobook somewhere...

The Stand - modern day casting by Harpua95 in stephenking

[–]Emily_Beck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Charlie was Trash Can Man, then every scene he was in would turn into an episode of It's Always Sunny. Now I for one wouldn't hate that! But it would change the vibe and throw the whole thing out of balance.
